• Finicky with Windows 7 - but can work.

  Pros

  Versatile, my all time favorite photo editor. You can see thumbnails for every file in the folder. You can quickly scan over thousands of thumbnails looking for one specific picture. Numerous other features.

  Cons

  Apparently, it's no long actively supported. When you open it, it can cause Windows 7 to lock up. You cannot access task manager or anything else when it happens. A ctrl alt del will get the Task manager up, but you cannot choose Compupic to close. You have to reboot. The only way to avoid this, was uninstall and reinstall. It seems to me that the start up has a lot of processes trying to execute, and it's locking up. If you close it in a big folder with a lot of pics, that seems to lock it up. It may be I wasn't waiting long enough for the processes to complete, but my computer was completely locked up while in this condition. I couldn't get to the desktop, open or use any other programs, or anything. Word around the web is that it doesn't work well with Win7, but it can be made to. Photodex says it does. I had numerous lock ups before I got it working consistently.

  Summary

  You may have to run it in compatability mode. Then sift through the preferences, and turn off the automatic features: background format detection, scanning for changes, background disk identification, etc. It appears to me that when you open it, it gets bogged down in all these functions. When I turned them off, I had no more problems. Also, under 'Startup', designate a startup folder. You don't want too many pictures in this folder. It seems that when it starts up, it's going to start thumbnailing them all. I also turned off thumbnail creation. It seems to me, there are just too many processes starting up and it is either crashing it, or locking it up. But when it locks up, you have to hard reboot to clear it.

  EASILY resize, auto crop to various formats (4x6, 5x7 etc), sharpen, shift color and add captions and talk bubbles. Lots of features but could have a few more for $80. <p> <p>Ability to generate photo index cards is fantastic! <p> <p>Computer slide show capability with various speeds, transitions etc. is a definite plus. <p> <p>Free 15 day trial will convince most users that this is a quality program. Standard version of CompuPic is a best buy at $40. Avoid lower cost express version.

  Cons

  Red eye reduction could be better. Also wish it had cloning and other features of more advanced photo editing software programs but it is still a very user friendly program.

  It makes thumbnails so fast and keeps database size so small that it is amazing. The only drawback being that the viewer is not as fast as ACDSee.

  I bought Compupic 6.23 Pro and it is extremely unstable. In fact, it finally got to the point where it barely works. The error is a program check in Compupic's "if.dnt" code. I have tried to work with their support but got nowhere - the usual disable AV software, load latest video drivers, etc... This problem occurred on a three month Dell XPS system.
