CHM Decoder takes the unpopular CHM file type, commonly used for Help files, and easily converts it to the more readable HTML. The program's simplicity is its biggest benefit, as it allows users of all skill levels to operate it.

The program's interface was simple for us to grasp; its major functions were divided into three tabs. Oddly, this program designed to convert Help files didn't contain one of its own. The three-step process was very intuitive, requiring us to locate the CHM file in question, select a destination for it, and simply convert it. We tested the program with a large file and were pleased that it took fewer than 20 seconds to convert. While the converted file was saved in its new destination, it also opened our Web browser and displayed the Help file in its entirety. This was the best way to view the file because the saved HTML file seemed to have broken each page into its own file, which was a pain to view. The program's best feature was a tab that detailed the size and built-in files of the conversion. It wasn't essential to our process and wasn't really necessary. However, this didn't take away from the smooth conversion and readability of the program.

CHM Decoder is a freeware program. It comes as a compressed file. We recommend this program because of its fast, simple conversion.

Absolutely love this little program. Small, fast, efficient. No errors on output.

It didn't cook dinner for me. Well, that and you lose the ability to search the entire *.chm by keyword. (The latter is a small price to pay for the kicka$$ product this software generates.)
Summary
This program took a *.chm file and turned it into a standalone website. It creates a 2-column webpage (columns are sizeable!) with the TOC in the left and the actual book page in the right (summoned when link in left hand TOC is clicked). Subsequent files are stored one folder down in the same directory. The final product is cleaner and better looking than the original *.chm, and as an added bonus, its IMMEDIATLEY ready for web publishing! 2 thumbs way, way up for this program.

Quick, easy to use, launches the converted document in a web browser. The extracted files for my chm are complete.

Summary
You select Open button, browse to the CHM location, select the CHM, select Open button, then select Go, and viola! Is it complete - the html file is now open in your browser with a menu. How easy is that? I highly recommend this tiny application.

had to add a functional src value to the resulting target frame in the frame set so it would play nice with firefox.<p>(I made it open up to the intro instead of a blank frame)
