BwanaDik is an IP address (WAN and LAN) menu item. Yes, another IP address app. Just what the world needs. You may be asking yourself "why the heck does the world need another IP address application?" Well, it doesn't. But I did. I looked all over for an IP address app that met my needs, and never found one. So I wrote my own. Here's what I wanted in an IP app:

Small, simple, and resides in the menu bar

Monitors my network for a good connection. If the connection is lost, let me know with an alert the second it comes back online.

Quickly copy my WAN and LAN IP address to the menu bar.

The second point is the most important, which is really why I wrote this thing. See, I work at a coffee shop that has a really crappy DSL line, and an even crappier Airport Base Station. The connection comes and goes every 5 minutes. And there is nothing more frustrating than opening up Safari and typing in a search in the google bar only to be slapped with an alert sheet saying the site cannot be found. Then I have to sit around watching my Network control panel to see when I'm back online again, because a lot of times the info I need on the web is for work. Now, with BwanaDik, I can look at the menu bar and know right away if I can access the internet or not. Even better, when my network is back online, BwanaDik lets me know right away with an alert window. So now I can keep typing code and when the network is ready, I can go do my searches and whatnot. So, yes, there are a lot of IP address apps out there. I'm sure they are all great. But this one does exactly what I want it to. It probably doesn't do what you want, but that's OK with me. No more features will be added to BwanaDik anyway.

i love it, but it keeps disappearing

has been disappearing from my menu bar lately - it might be closing/sleeping my MacBook Pro that makes it go away...but i'm not sure. i've just often looked for it and found it AWOL lately (i'm running 10.6.4)

i've been using BwanaDik steadily on all my machines for about two years now, i think...i love its functionality; it's one of the first things i install after getting a new machine or wiping or creating a new user on an old one. and i don't even use all its functionality - namely, i don't have it display any alerts. i just love its combining the IP-address-in-menu-bar function with the little customizable status light that tells me how my connection's doing at a glance. my only complaint is that version 3.3 doesn't seem to be completely comfortable with 10.6.4; i keep looking for BwanaDik in my menu bar and finding it's quit somewhere along the line...and i've never seen a crash report or alert about it on my screen, so it must be crashing very surreptitiously, below the OS's radar or something. it's disconcerting...such that i think i might look around and see if there's another app that provides quite the same functionality.

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com. Honestly, I have been using the previous version of BwanaDik for so long I had no idea it even had Leopard issues. I wonder what they were. I never had any problems, but I have upgraded and everything's still fine. Good work. If I had to list the most indispensable free Mac utilities out there, BwanaDik, RSS Menu, Butler, Adium and Warp would be among the top ten. There's just something perfect about this group.

It allows you to monitor and get notified if your connection gets interrupted. The biggest issue is that release 3.0.4 is nowhere to be found, and the website doesn't seem to work anymore. The author suggested that this is 159% freeware, and doesn't want to be contacted, but i'd rather give him something for his time so he can maintain it! It does seem to take a lot of memory for what it does, but it doesn't seem to slow down my system.
