Buzzsaw truly is a do-it-yourself defragmenter for those who require no interface and who like to work in DOS. The program consists of two executables, one that runs in Windows and monitors your system in the background as you work, defragging whenever it detects a change. The other, which runs only from the DOS command-line prompt, does defragging based on parameters selected by the user. In our tests, defragging results were decent but did not noticeably improve system performance. The included help file is basic and may not answer all questions. The most worthwhile part of this program is the component that monitors your system--the user-unfriendliness of the on-demand defragger suggests that you use Windows' built-in utility instead.

It's just like a virus: once you get it in your computer, it doesn't come out. It doesn't do anything when you activate it but sit there, so it must be a virus in disguise. SHAME ON YOU C-Net: you let a virus in.

On the fly defragmenting can be very dangerous, i mean, if the computer suddenly crashes, a file could be lost the program was actually working on. But i will take that risk because this program is DEFINITELY doing something useful. :)

I miss a logfile. The changes should be logged, and i would like to see the filename, the program is actually working on.

Shows you whats being done on screen, the Buzzsaw home site has a DirMS to go with buzzsaw this is even better. On my xp defragmenter I stiil had those white lines(free space not defragmented) on the analisys with these programs everything was one single blue then green section.

I actually did not use buzzsaw, but instead went to the authors site and downloaded DIRMS.EXE 1,2,2,0. Extracted it to c:\ went to start, run, typed cmd, DOS screen opened, changed directory to c:\, typed in "dirms c -q", and it ran like a charm. Did have to let it run overnight since I have a 60Gig drive. The next day, programs loaded faster and IE screens popped up instantly. Even fixed a sound problem I had on one program. As stated in the help file on the website, This is NOT for Win98. If you can read, you can run this program!

This nifty little program helped my files from getting fragmented, and helped improve the read-and-write speed of my hard disk. Overall, it speeded up my computer. I tend to delete and install new stuff everytime (especially from Download.com!), so this helps keep my disk neat and tidy.
Cons
Most ppl don't understand the need for defragging, and these ppl are also the ones who are just basic PC end-users. DIRMs is not for those who love eye-candy and Buzzsaw is not much to look at either, despite being DIRMs' GUI. Needs a healthy amount of experience in DOS environments (for DIRMS), so this is strictly for the pros and computer junkies only. Noobies keep out!
