Editors' review

We're big fans of software suites that auto-update without getting in the way, and that let you weed out unwanted applications from its roster without having to get sneaky. Windows Live Essentials does both. The software suite of seven Windows Live applications doesn't shy away from the marketing vehicle it is, and it also detects and updates Microsoft-related items that aren't installed as part of the pack, such as Outlook and Silverlight. Our biggest complaint is its size, which weighs in at 134MB. However, if you've got space to spare and use Windows Live applications such as Messenger, Outlook, and Windows Live Family Safety, this all-in-one bundle will help you keep things current.

    "You got to be kidding!"

    December 20, 2012   |   By servent1777

Version: Windows Live Essentials 2011 15.4.3508.1109

    Pros

    None. Really none.

    Cons

Microsoft really put out anything useful other than copy everyone else? And when they do copy it's crap. I not a MAC user but Steve Jobs was right their software is really poorly written.

My windows live doesn't even work. It just "non responding." I'm not surprised at all being from MS.

    Summary

    Don't waste your time.

"Forget this 2011 version-stick with WLE 2009 version."

    August 02, 2012   |   By andreaborman

Version: Windows Live Essentials 2011 15.4.3508.1109

    Pros

Not very much. The only plus is that Windows Live Movie Maker now supports direct record from webcam. But then you can do that with Windows XP Movie Maker 2.1 which works on Windows 7,Vista and Windows 8.

    Cons

Windows Live Messenger not user friendly, crashes slow. Horrible Ribbon in Windows Live Photo Gallery and Live Mail.

    Summary

Foret it and stick with Windows Live Essentials 2009 instead.Microsoft are now forcing Windows 7 users to upgrade to this Windows Live Essentials 2011 version.By issuing a mandatory upgrade so now if you try to log into Messenger 209 it won't let you.If it is not set in any compatibility mode that is. But just set your Windows Live Messenger 2009 in compatibility mode for Windows XP and you WON'T get the update.
Then you can stay with WLE 2009. So forget this WLE 2011 version and stick with WLE 2009 instead. Avoid this version-2011. Andrea Borman.

Get the right version of Windows Live Essentials 2009 version. Andrea Borman.

    "My Info:Ver.2011(Build 15.4.3555.0308)2010"

    June 27, 2012   |   By Rassy48

Version: Windows Live Essentials 2011 15.4.3508.1109

    Pros

Like any other new program, it takes getting used to. I have been using it for about 2 months now. Not used to the ribbons at the top. Like the drop down menus better. I have been using Outlook and subsequent followers for years, so Windows Live not too bad.

    Cons

I am unable to view my "File Menu" across the top of the program. Apparently the means to "display file menu" are not on my program. I have researched it online and tried to follow the direction to make it display. I have no "three little icons" in the upper right hand corner" of my program which are supposed to be the path to a drop down that says "Show or Hide Menu Bar". I hesitate to unistall and reinstall the program, but I am unable to create signatures for my emails.

    Summary

All in all, it seems to be not too bad. The program is like anything else new in life ... you have to use it to learn it. But then again, that's why I call these crazy keyboarded monsters "confusers" instead of computers!

    "Essentials is terrible!"

    May 25, 2012   |   By AngelicSanctity

Version: Windows Live Essentials 2011 15.4.3508.1109

    Pros

The ability to appear online to certain people while appearing offline to others was the only addition to Windows Live Essentials that I liked.

    Cons

Can't change display name, can't use handwriting, not very easy to navigate and so much more.

    Summary

I believe this is the worst update Microsoft could have made for Windows Live.

    Download the old Windows Live!
