Editors' review

System Mechanic Free does an excellent job of optimizing your computer's performance and protecting you from viruses. Though it's not easy to set up by any means, the number of features tucked away inside of this program is too good to pass up. It doesn't hurt that the program sports a nifty, easy-to-use layout, either.

This program handles just about any task you'd need to perform to boost your computer's performance. In addition to the typical virus and malware protection, it offers performance scans, memory and Registry clean-ups, and other boosts that will keep your computer fast and error free. Before you can get started, the program offers a "quick" scan that took more than 20 minutes during our testing, which was a little annoying. Once we got past that, we were able to set up routine cleaning tasks -- so the program wasn't so much of a time suck -- and a slew of bonus features that offered performance boosts and other goodies. All of the app's goodies are easy to find, thanks to a menu that seamlessly blends style and usability. This program's default installation makes you download a widget and sign up for e-mails about the program, so make sure you opt out of that if you don't want them.

While it may not outperform anti-virus software at killing viruses or utility software at cleaning up your PC, it does both just well enough to make the grade. Since it rolls both of those features up in an impressively polished, easy-to-use package, it's definitely worth the download. System Mechanic Free will impress rookie users and hardcore computer geeks, equally.

"Can i give negative stars? HORRIBLE STAY AWAY"

    July 08, 2014   |   By innerweb

    Version: System Mechanic Free

gives you something to do for the next week trying to restore your computer after this "software" destroys your registry and renders your backups unusable.

well this is about as bad as software can get. not only does it not do what it promises but it in fact destroys your system. by rendering your registry not just empty but unreadable, it does a better job than any malware or virus out there of destroying the very thing you're trying to save by downloading it. irresponsible programmers like this should be jailed.

worse than bad. i would love to meet up (in a dark alley) with the ***holes who wrote this program and the jerks who put fake positive reviews here. come on CNET get your act together. people trust you to weed out the bad software. you really dropped the ball on this one.

anyone know of a good program to pull data off of a dead machine? tried ultimate boot disk and it is sort of working but slow and tedious.

did i mention this software is bad?

    "Not to shabby"

    June 21, 2014   |   By Ed Sterling

    Version: System Mechanic Free

I have been running System Mechanic paid version for number of years with no complaints. It brought and old XP system back to life, I also run it on a Vista system and Windows 7. I like it better then CC Cleaner with its has a vast assortment of features.

The load up to run is a bit slow.

The disk makes a good Frisbee

Free to reel you in. Barely any features compared to any free utility. Paid version is expensive $29.99 a year. This program will mess up your pc! Don't let it touch your registry unless you have a recovery disk. No support what so ever.
