"The best IRC client!"

January 13, 2008  |  By ciglione1

 |  Version: Snak 5.3.3

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I've been using Snak for years, and I'm glad to see it's still getting better and better! I used to have a license and I was thinking to get a new one, so I went to the website and found out about the pledge to kiva.org. What to say... Great! I felt even more motivated to send the money, since it would be used to help those people. I totally appreciate their support to Kiva and I wish more developers would do such things!

The only thing I really would like to see is the possibility to have a DCC transfer window open "in the background", like a private message (basically, without making it the active window). Apart from this, I'm completely satisfied with the program.

By the way, the support is also very good. I remember sending info on a bug to the developer: he replied and said he'd work on it, and in the following Snak version I found the bugs had been fixed.

I did try other IRC clients, but Snak is still the best by far!

"Great initiative. Supporting kiva.org microcredit..."

November 15, 2007  |  By brunobfan

 |  Version: Snak 5.3.3

Summary

...with PayPal payments
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I'm so completely thrilled to see that the authors of Snak have pledged to give all PayPal payments to kiva.org (http://kiva.org) Kiva is one of my favorite charities because they help by giving poor people access to small loans so they can help themselves. It's totally different than writing a check to a random charity to do with as they please. It's called micro-credit afaik

So, when you pay for or renew a Snak license, the money will be sent to kiva and loaned out to someone in the third world. Each lender loans out only a small amount like $25 which goes towards the full amount that the loaner has requested. The Snak authors are even publishing their page at kiva so you can check that they actually do what they have promised. Right now they've already loaned out 18 separate chunks of money. Way to go, Snak users :-) You can read more about their pledge at http://www.snak.com/KivaPledge.html

Oh, and since this is a review I better end by saying that 5.3.3 works great. I haven't updated to Leopard yet so I haven't seen the bugs that this version fixes. Snak is stable and reliable.

"Necessary update"

February 16, 2007  |  By IUsedToHaveHair

 |  Version: Snak 5.2.1

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
5.2 was a bit buggy imo, but 5.2.1 is much better. The whois mesages went to the console instead of the active window, and that's now fixed. Option-return to send a message as a /me didn't work in 5.2, and that bothered me, but that's also taken care of.

I've got no other complaints, except that I'd like the channel buttons in the windows to be sorted alphabetically _and_ by network. Now the buttons appear to be in the order the channels were added to the window

"The Best IRC Client for Mac"

November 19, 2006  |  By kalahari

 |  Version: Snak 5.1.5

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I've got a strong liking for "plain looking" programs that favor usability over garish eye candy, but that's just me. Snak isn't "sexy" but it _works_ really, really well. It's stable, efficient, well thought out and it's extremely configurable. If you don't care for the way the UI looks, there's bound to be a preference for it.

I've used Snak for _years_ and while I do try out its competitors from time to time I find it unequalled and always return.

"Best IRC app for the Mac bar none"

September 25, 2006  |  By kknopp

 |  Version: Snak 5.1.5

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I started using IRC on my Mac via Homer, then Ircle

I was never happy with my Mac IRC experience until Snak came out in 96/97

I have been using it since. Best IRC app for the Mac hands down.

Well worth the cost if you IRC frequently.

"Excellent but pricy"

 |  Version: Snak 5.1.3

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Really both the most comprehensive and the most straightforward IRC program for either Mac or Windows. It's also more expensive than any of the others ($29 vs $20), but it's been around a long time and it's updated recently.
There are just too many great freeware/cheap programs that have disappeared from the Mac world because the developers had no incentive to carry on development so I'm happy to pay for Snak. The developer seems to respond politely and promptly to mails.

"dissapointed at lisense policy"

May 03, 2006  |  By freemem_dotmac

 |  Version: Snak 5.1.2

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Well the application is ok. Kent responses fast on email. I feel how ever a bit fooled. When i bought this shareware application, i was impressed on the "Since the registration fee for Snak is a one-time payment" policy.

Now on universal version im supposed to buy this thing again.

Perhaps i would, If there was no implication originally that this would not cover future versions, but as far as i see the license emails and the original buy text, i was supposing a lifetime of upgrades, with was the reason on the original buy.

The 2 year upgrade period was not in standing when i bought this, instead there was "one-time payment" policy.

Keeps geting better and better with age. Been using Snak for a long time and it has matured into adulthood with grace and style. I hope Kent keeps improving the program for many more years. It is used every day and I don't expect to replace it.

The selection bug has annoyed me ever since version 5.0. About time it got fixed. The way the buttons glide around to make room when you drag panels is cool, cool, cool. No complaints at this point.

"No probs"

 |  Version: Snak 5.1.1

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Hard to find anything bad to say. It's stable and works fine. I disagree with the last poster about version 5 being difficult for longtime Snak users. The only thing was the large, old channel settings dialog that got split into the ordinary settings dialog and the management dialog. You may have gotten used to clicking in the channel topic bar as a shortcut to get to the topic and ban list. You can actually still do that but to get the management dialog, hold down option when you click the topic bar. Otherwise you'll get the ordinary settings dialog. It might be somewhere in the manual, but who reads the manual after having used the program for years.
