SmartSync Pro is a universal tool for backing up and synchronizing your important data to your local drive, external flash or USB drive; CD or DVD; NAS or other storage device; network volume; or FTP server. If source data is destroyed or lost, it can easily be recovered. An intuitive wizard will help you set up what to copy, and where and when to copy it. The program replicates only new and updated files, which substantially reduces synchronization time. SmartSync Pro allows you to synchronize files and folders when computers cannot be connected over a local network. Its filtering system lets you keep synchronized only the files you need.

"Not worth the price"

Pros
Simple, installs easily, no adware (that I noticed), few options to confuse a novice, uses Zip (open standard) compression/encryption (but only for entire "packages").
Cons
SmartSync Pro software is missing a lot of things you expect even with free software. For example, choosing where to save your backup, you can't even create a new folder.
There are few options for replication, file conflicts, etc. It can't do two-way sync, compress or encrypt individual files, keep an archive of older file versions, etc. The user interface is very dated and always brings up a clunky wizard even for editing an existing backup job. There's little "pro" here.
Critically, as another reviewer explained, it can't seem to properly use Volume Shadow Copy to backup files that are open or in-use (like Microsoft Outlook PST files). Even the built-in Windows 7/Vista backup utility can do this.
It touts using industry standard ZIP compression and encryption but only when your entire job is put into one huge file that's very slow and awkward to work with. They also inexplicably used their own file extension so ZIP software won't natively open the archive.Summary
I have no idea why this places in the top 10 here. It's not even in the same league as some of the other options. For imaging and drive recovery Macrium Reflect Free blows it away. And for file backup/sync there are many better options.

"Would not back up "IN use" files"

Summary
I specifically bought this software to back up a program that is very critical to our business, our scheduling software. We are constantly changing our schedules so a near real-time copy is critical to our business in case of natural disaster or computer disaster. I asked prior to purchase if SmartSync could back up in-use files and was immediately told that it would. When installed, the software failed to back up the in-use file, giving me a warning that the file was in use. I have emailed two support requests, but have received no response to either one after five days. I am getting a refund for the software.

"Excellent and easy to use"

Pros
I downloaded the free trial of both SmartSync Pro and SyncBackSE, and I think this is much easier to use, and has pretty much the same functionality, with a few less options. It works perfectly for me. It's fast - considerably faster than the competition, and the excellent interface makes it difficult to make mistakes.
Cons
It copies all files by default; I think it should default to excluding files like thumbs.db, etc., but allow you to override the default. It's a little pricey at $45.

"All the features you could want"

Pros
I searched high and low for a good utility to back-up my workstation the way I wanted it. This has all the options I wanted, plus some. And, it gives me the option to create the backups in standard windows disk/file formats (some utilities create backups using their own proprietary format so you can't manipulate/access those files with Windows Explorer or other utilities), and doesn't create junk files (I found some utilities drop a hidden file into each directory).
When I sent an e-mail for support questions, I generally got thorough and complete responses within 24 hoursCons

"Slow Support and Incompetent Product"

Cons
It does not copy the file/folder permissions over as it should. Support is very slow and not very communicative at all.
Summary
I found that with Robocopy I am able to do more thing than with Smartsync and it's free. It takes a little bit of time to figure out the Syntax but works much better.

Summary
I've been looking for a good backup program for years. I've tried several and always been disappointed. I took to merely copying my files and folders to an external drive but each time it just overwrote what was there so files I'd deleted stayed on the backup drive. I downloaded the trial version and was blown away to discover the program I'd been looking for. Just bought it.

"Easy, Reliable, Flexible"

Pros
I have been using SmartSync Pro for 2 1/2 years to back up all my C-drive data files and also to backup my main external drive to a second external drive. It works flawlessly. I use SmartSync Pro in addition to a disk-imaging program that backs up all my drives for full-disk or file-level recovery situations.
SmartSync Pro also keeps past versions of files which is helpful when I have been able to circumvent supposed foolproof autobackup functions in the programs I am working on.
SmartSync Pro is used as my absolute last chance failsafe way to know I have my data files safe when everything else fails. SmartSync Pro has never failed.Cons
It was hard for me to understand the program's several notification functions and options. But this is a minor matter.
Summary
After 2 1/2 years I am still very pleased with this reliable program.
Forgot to mention SmartSync Pro works great on Win 7 64.
When I contacted support about how to turn off some notifications, the response was immediate with the answer.
The program gets updated periodically.

Also, the program backs up as files are changed. As I work on my files, they get backed up. This was the whole point of my buying SmartSync Pro in the first place.
And it's fast. -
