CNET Editors' review
Conceptworld's RecentX is a fast file launcher, one of many such tools designed to open frequently needed applications quickly, usually on the fly, but it focuses on recently used items. It gathers everything in one spot for quick identification and access, giving the highest priority to the most commonly and recently used files, folders, programs, and Web sites.
There are two main ways of accessing this useful tool, a system tray icon that you can also left-click to access the program's main menu, and a sidebar with quick-access tabs for files, folders, programs, and Web sites. You can adjust the transparency and other aspects of the sidebar and drag it anywhere you like on the desktop. Clicking a tab calls up RecentX's dialog-based main interface with all recently accessed items on the tab displayed by name, location, and date/time. A search field and Smart Tags further simplify locating items. There's also a Help file and Advanced options, including start-up preferences, Filters, a File Manager, and a built-in Command Prompt. Opening an item is a simple matter of clicking its icon-labeled entry in RecentX's list; left-clicking entries opens an extensive file menu. We especially appreciate the ability to easily set hot keys for the most frequently used functions as well as cut and paste from inside RecentX--time-saving extras for a time-saving program.
We've seen plenty of "timesaving" software that fails to live up to its promise. With its unique tabbed sidebar, useful organization, quick function, and handy extras, RecentX is a keeper.
Editor's note: This is a review of the full version of RecentX 3.0.8. The trial version is limited to 30 days trial only.Publisher's Description
From Conceptworld:
RecentX lets you launch any file as you type, provides fast access to widespread documents, deep folders, cluttered programs, Internet history & bookmarks/favorites. Although RecentX can find any file or folder, it gives higher preference to 'recently' accessed files & folders as they are more important to you. It is easier to pick the right file from a smaller set of important files than to pick from a large clutter of unimportant files. You do not have to spend time adding your favorite files, folders. Also, common file operations (copy, paste) can be quickly performed without using a file manager.
What's new in this version: Version 3.0.15 is a bug-fixing release.

"RecentX: Nice Concept but Flawed Execution!"
Version: RecentX 3.0.12
Pros
Great concept for improving office productivity.
Cons
Poor design of important functions diminishes RecentX's usefulness as a timesaver.
Summary
RecentX attempts to offer a solution to the need of improving office productivity. During the course of a busy day, I may open nearly 3 dozen Word documents. Consequently, it would be nice to quickly re-open a recent file by clicking on a categorized list and selecting the recent file rather than searching for it with Windows Explorer.
RecentX's CONCEPT of listing all recent activity into convenient categories (ie. files, folders, programs, & web sites) is very appealing as a time saver.
UNFORTUNATELY, RecentX's execution of its concept falls short of the mark.
Although RecentX categorizes by 'content' type (such as 'files'), the lists within those broad categories can rapidly become a cluttered mess, defeating the purpose of quickly finding a specific file.
Although RecentX offers a method--Tags--to organize a 'catagory' list into groups of common files, the Tag function is poorly designed, rendering it ineffective and inefficient. How so? Try to rename or delete a Tag category! Also, moving files (or folders) into or out of a Tag category is not as fluid as it should be.
In CONCLUSION, until RecentX improves its means to categorize files (or folders) into groups within the list of a main category, RecentX fails to live up to its potential as a productivity tool. -
"THE Information Organizer"
Version: RecentX 3.0.12
Pros
RecentX is awesome. It organizes all your information right at your finger tips. No more rummaging thru various menus, windows and whatnot for a file, program or website.
Cons
would like more flexibility in the column chooser, such as to archive tags that are infrequently used, maybe.
Summary
This beautiful little app will save you time, pulled out hair, and your peace of mind. You literally have control over all your information right under your fingertips that is better organized than anything comming out of Redmond, WA!

"Finally found the file launcher I've been looking for!"
Version: RecentX 3.0.12
Pros
So many to name. Please read review below.
Cons
None so far.
Summary
This small program clears up all the clutter on your desktop. I got tired of constantly organizing, creating, deleting unwanted desktop icons. Other desktop organizers worked for a while but even those were not enough to control the every creeping jungle of disorganized icons growing on my desktop daily. I've tried countless numbers of program launchers and desktop cleanup utilities until I found RecentX. It easily organizes programs, files, folders, documents etc. into one quick launcher utility. It's small, unobtrusive, lightweight and very fast. It only uses up about 6 MB of memory. You can launch programs and folder from the system tray or the small launcher bar which you can reposition to your liking. You can create tags and add tags to programs and folders to customize launch lists or create several launch lists of your own. Now I can see more of my desktop and wallpaper. This is bar none the best desktop app launcher out there. Plus the interface is clean, neat and professional looking.

Summary
Review of Recent X
I have heard much about RecentX and decided to try it. It's truly a great and time saving program.
Recent X is a fast file launcher. It allows you to open recently used documents, media, folders and websites in a flash. But why use it you ask? Why not open these files and folders manually? The answer is the fortune of time and aggravation you will save using RecentX and the refreshing convenience that comes from use of well designed program.
RecentX puts all your recently used documents, media, folders and websites in an easy accessible and searchable hotkey triggered list for super fast identification and access. The most recently used files, folders, programs and websites get priority.
Want to keep working on a Microsoft Word document you were editing yesterday, last week, last month, and know its name but forgot where you saved it in your tree file structure? Call up Recent X with CTRL+SHIFT+1 and your recently used documents list will be in front of you, type a bit of the file name you are after and in a flash and your document is there, and you can open it and work on it with a minimum of fuss. All I can say is wow! Increased productivity here I come! Also hotkeys are configurable.
The program can also be accessed from the system tray or from clicking on a floating tab panel. Best of all it is not complicated and it is user friendly and intuitive. Microsoft why don't you design software like this?
Better still you can easily configure it to open folders in any file manager of your choice. You can drag your recently used files right out of Recent X as attachments into e-mail - which is just awesome - it is worth buying for this alone. Recent X even allows you to cut recently used files from your recent files list and you can them paste them to locations of your choice within the folder list of Recent X itself!
You can also list all matching items in searches you conduct so your searches are not limited to recent documents, media, folders and websites only. Also the Windows explorer menu is also accessible while in Recent X.
In short Recent X is a wonderful, well thought out application that will save you a fortune of time, aggravation and money once you use it and you will soon wonder how you ever got by without it.
I strongly recommend you purchase a copy. It will pay for itself in no time!

"tremendously useful"
Version: RecentX 3.0.10

Inconspicuous on the desktop, but highly accessible. Easy to install and use.
A range of options is available once you locate a file -- open, explore folder, delete, tag, or copy its path. You can exclude specified files or folders from results.Cons

Summary
RecentX is a go-to tool that you'll miss every time you have to use a PC without it. This is the quickest means I've seen of getting to files, folders, programs, and web sites.

"This is a must have product."
Version: RecentX 3.0.10
Pros
I like everything about this product. It's intuitive and easy to use. It's great for finding a file you used but may not remember the whole file name or you remember the folder name so you can find it that way.
Cons
There is nothing that I don't like about this program.
Summary
I have used this product for at least 3 or 4 years now - first at home then I purchased a new license so I could use it at work because it is such a time-saver versus using Windows Explorer to dig through your tree of folders just to find a file. One great feature is the ease with which it can be used to identify and attach one or more files to an email. It is also very easy to adjust or change the customizable features.

"practical and well conceived."
Version: RecentX 3.0.6
Pros
Quick and easy:
-access to recent documents or projects
-filename search and go-to any file
-launch programs (can be used similar to Launchy)
-open folders quickly
I also like that favorites / tags can also be set.Cons
Minor: The web tab is a little clunky when web history is enabled... but I never use it to search my web history, anyhow. Good for searching bookmarks.
Summary
My wishlist:
- integration into the Win7 taskbar
-web-search tab that can also go to a typed URL (or one that can search diigo/delicious bookmarks)
Overall, very nice program. I am glad I registered it. I use it all the time.
