"R-Studio for Mac saved me my job."
Version: R-Studio Data Recovery 2.6 build 1396
Pros
You can test it before buy.
Cons
None! Really.
Summary
One (un)pleasant morning my Mac stopped loading. And there was my project to deliver to my boss next day. Hadn't it been delivered on time, I'd certainly have lost my job.
I created its startup disk, started my computer, and was able to save all my files. Reinstalling the system then was trivial. -
"The most effective low cost recovery tool I know"
Version: R-Studio Data Recovery 2.6 build 1396
Pros
The free version allows to test if you can even try to recover, recover small files, but the FULL version is so much more powerful! Even giving multiple 'images' of the drive, which I was not expecting.
Cons
Price, would be nicer if free, but honestly... I am willing to chip in.
Also like any recovery software, it takes time, that is just the cost of dealing with the subject, and not the product itself.Summary
It has saved my butt so many times....
I only wish it helped with PHYSICALLY damaged drives to... then I would be in heaven with this tool. -
"Awesome product. Fast. Simple. Mostly intuitive."
Version: R-Studio Data Recovery 2.6 build 1396
Pros
* Easy to use.
* Works with drives, and with disk images.Cons
User interface a bit scattered. Actually had to read the manual once!
Summary
Seagate Seatools pronounced my drive dead. I download a couple products to try to get my data back. One was successful in making a disk image of the drive, but then I couldn't figure out how to get files out of the disk image. R-Studio took 2 hours to scan my disk image. After that it was trivial to extract sample files to convince me that it worked.
I had one glitch, but it's resolution is testament to R Tools Technology:
When I bought my license online, by mistake I clicked the Winsnooze version instead of the Mac version. After figure this out when the key didn't work, I emailed their tech support people. This was on the August Long Weekend. I didn't expect a reply until Tuesday at the earliest.
I received a correct key 3 hours later. Talk about service.
Because of their help, I don't have to retype a 400 page manuscript, and I don't have to rewrite all of my website templates from scratch.
Highly recommended.

"Saved all my home photo/video archive from my G-DRIVE"
Version: R-Studio Data Recovery 2.6 build 1396
Pros
This software really recovers files.
Cons
You need to read its help to understand how to recover files.
Summary
I was transferring a new portion of my family photos to the drive when the cable dropped off the socket. When connected back, the drive didn't auto-mount, and was totally inaccessible. A friend of mine recommended me R-Studio, I installed it, then had to read carefully its help to understand what to do. After that I scanned the disk, and was able to recover ALL files on the disk. Kudos to the developers!

"Beats the others"
Version: R-Studio Data Recovery 2.6 build 1396
Pros
A failed LaCie RAID volume that wasn't recoverable with TechTool or Diskwarrior, R-Studio Mac saved my bacon.
Cons
Mac user interface is a little raw in places. No functional loss though.
Summary
Excellent tool that recovers where others cannot.

"A very powerful data recovery tool."
Version: R-Studio Data Recovery 2.6 build 1396
Pros
Capable of solving virtually any data recovery tasks, and not only for Macs. In addition to common file recovery from existing or deleted disks, it can find files using file signatures . File preview and RAID reconstruction are very nice features.
Cons
Its additional emergency recovery disk is locked to one computer.
Summary
This software is in my data rescue kit. I used it to recover files not only for me, but for a lot of my friends, too, because it supports a large variety of file systems, not only Mac. Windows NTFS, and Linux ExtFS and UFS are in the list. It also can perform disk copy and imaging, and includes a Hex/text editor. Everything to become a data recovery pro.

"Stay Away!"
Version: R-Studio Data Recovery 2.0 build 903
Summary
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
My HD was not mounting so I dl'ed the trial version or r-studio. this program identified the files. i paid the 81CND and followed their instructions perfectly. what happens next is a nightmare: r-studio spins my drive overnight attempting to retrieve my close to 1T of data. following morning r-studio is still working but it's only at the 2nd sector. i abort and try to see what it did: NOTHING. No. WORSE THAN NOTHING: r-studio not inly did not rescue a single file it actually hosed my drive.
next i call tech support and a rude techie answers from a wind tunnel -- i can hardly hear him but when i do i'm subjected to the smelliest attitude and tone ever. this "expert" is condescending and proceeds to interrupt -- i'm no newb here and i know when an app does not work as advertised.
in conclusion, r-studio will do nothing to help you retrieve data unless of course your hd is working perfectly. WASTE OF MONEY. ZERO STARS. -
"Recovers files.... very slowly."
Version: R-Studio Data Recovery 1.3 build 362
Pros
This software is rated one star because it actually did recover most files.
Cons
The recovery process took 9 *days* to complete. Tech support seems to reply in broken English, or hurries through the responses ultimately leaving support requests vague.
Summary
When data is lost, most people are eager to recover it. This software won't get your data back quickly, although it does recover most files. I purchased this program on the advice of a friend who uses it on the Windows platform. Maybe it works better on that end, but my experience on a Mac was not good. I ended up canceling the scan process and buying a different recovery program (Data Rescue II for Mac) which performed the scan of a 1TB drive in 9 hours.
The tech support contact there suggested the lengthy scan time was due to read errors on the drive. The loss of data was due to me erasing it, not a drive failure. So after I recovered all my data using a different program - that completed the scan with zero read errors reported - I decided to go back and see how R-Studio's recovery would test in comparison to Data Rescue II.
In 9 days time the scan was complete, and with zero read errors. I inquired with their tech support as to why it took notably longer than a competitor's software. I received no reply from them.
Lesson learned- do take advantage of the demos! If I hadn't been so eager to retrieve my data I would have made a far wiser decision, which would be to avoid this program in favor of one which completes the same task in a shred of the amount of time.
