Copying and pasting between different programs can cause a lot of formatting problems and waste a lot of time. Plain Clip for Mac tries to fix these issues by allowing users to preset clipboard styles and eliminate format issues when cutting and pasting. However, the program's inconsistency overwhelms its usefulness.

Plain Clip for Mac is a free program that has a great concept but is too buggy to be useful. The program allows you to select which elements you want to remove from material on your clipboard. You can remove all formatting, spaces, lines and even HTML code. Unfortunately, this program does not have a user interface. Each time you want to use it, you must turn the program on. There is no way to check that the program is on other than trial and error by pasting. The program is very inconsistent, as sometimes you can paste multiple times with the settings intact but other times you can only paste once before the program quits. This program is supposed to help you save time and eliminate frustration, but with all its issues it might just do the opposite.

Plain Clip for Mac should allow users to get rid of unwanted formatting when pasting from their clipboard. Unfortunately, due to the lacking interface and inconsistency of this program it doesn't seem appropriate for anyone.

"Very Handy"

March 07, 2013  |  By MarkKojak

 |  Version: Plain Clip 2.4.7

Pros

I use it in combination with Spark and find it a really handy little application. I copy and paste a lot between applications, and it is great to get rid of unwanted formatting with a tap on a hotkey or two.

Cons

The only problem I have with the application is that, when I remove the formatting from a bulletted list, it puts in a couple of bullet icons which I have to delete by hand. I wish it would just paste the test, the Plain text.

"Doe exactly what it says, how it says it."

 |  Version: Plain Clip 2.4.3

Pros

I copy a lot of formatted text from the web and up till now pasted it into Bean and selected 'Remove all styles' and then copied it again. No need to bother now I have Plain Clip

Cons

None [and more stuff as this field has to be more than 10 chrs!]

Summary

Removes formatting from clipboard - what more can I say?

"Removal of formatting on paste is available within OS X"

June 25, 2012  |  By sonicraft

 |  Version: Plain Clip 2.4.2

Pros

I'm sure this is fine software and offers a few other good functions & settings, those mentioned above seem quite useful.

Cons

Not a con, per se, but the main function might be redundant with an already existing OS feature (?) (please feel free to comment, if I am incorrect)

Summary

I just found out that if I copy something to the clipboard, then paste using SHIFT-OPTION-COMMAND-V it removes formatting. So it might be that the main function of this software is unnecessary. If there is something I'm misunderstanding, I apologize. Perhaps this can be addressed in a later description.

"Essential utility works perfectly."

November 14, 2010  |  By slightlyoffkilter

 |  Version: Plain Clip 2.4

Pros

It does exactly what it says it will do without surprises. I use Butler to invoke it with a key-stroke combination. It does its job then disappears. Perfect.

Cons

None that I can find.

Summary

Not every application has text formatting stripping capabilities. This utility overcomes that limitation. I use a multiple clipboard utility which can also strip out formatting but have encountered problems using it with Adobe Creative Suite applications, which I use extensively. Plain Clip works perfectly with CS.

"Flawlessly strips formatting from clipboard items."

September 09, 2010  |  By jeffanony

 |  Version: Plain Clip 2.4

Pros

Simple to use and works flawlessly.
Can be invoked with a keyboard command.

Cons

No downsides.

Summary

This little program runs when you invoke it, strips the formatting from an item on your clipboard, then quits on it's own to keep from cluttering your memory. Love it.

"Indispensable utility that I use constantly."

April 15, 2010  |  By slightlyoffkilter

 |  Version: Plain Clip 2.2.1

Pros

A one trick pony that performs that trick perfectly, it does exactly what it is supposed to.

Cons

Nothing to report.

Summary

Although many apps have the ability to paste without formatting, Plain Clip works with everything. By using Butler to invoke Plain Clip I can strip the formatting with 3 keystrokes no matter which software I am currently using. Simple but effective.

"I use it every day - new features add versatility"

December 28, 2009  |  By rickjohnson.us

 |  Version: Plain Clip 2.2.1

Pros

It's always ready in the DOCK to strip formatting for all copy and paste functions. I hadn't upgraded since v1 and love the additional Shift-Click preference options.

Cons

Nothing yet

Summary

Particularly useful when pasting something into an email and you want it to appear in your email's default font and size instead of the formatting in the source document, email, or web page.

The Shift-Click access to preferences allow you to set what will be stripped from copied text before you paste it into the destination location (such as invisible control characters, line breaks, etc.)

Summary

I'm always copying & pasting text from websites which I then just want as plain text. This is a saviour to me. I've got it launching with keyboard Maestro.

I'd love to find a similar app that removes line spacing too.

"My rescue!"

June 28, 2004  |  By Alexander Klar

 |  Version: Plain Clip 1.0.1

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
As a graphic designer I used to kill those silly text styles this way:

1. Command+C in word processor
2. Switch to BBEdit
3. Command+N
4. Command+V
5. Command+C
6. Switch to layout application
7. Command+V

It's no fun at all... but now I found this very cool and quickly working tool. I combined it with Spark, a neat Hot Key application that is powerful - and also Freeware! You can find it here:

http://chezjd.free.fr/Creation/logiciel.php?id=3&lang=1

Have fun killing all thos text styles! I sure will,
Alexander
