Picture Information Extractor

CNET Editors' review

by: CNET staff on July 20, 2009

Picture Information Extractor gives users the ability to see hidden information within digital photos. While this program will not appeal to everyone, those serious about photography will love it.

The program's interface is incredibly busy, but manageable. By balancing a file tree, photographs, and two screens of dense information, the designers could have laid this out in a more intuitive way. Luckily, a visit to the Help file and a little experimentation should help get most users comfortable. Once we had a feel for the program, we found it incredibly fast and helpful. With all necessary information laid out on the screen, it was only a matter of a few button clicks between selecting a photo from the file tree and having it appear on the screen with its details present. These details are the main attraction here. While users can alter the date the photo was taken with a simple calendar option, it's the photographic details that will hook serious photographers. Everything from F-stops, exposure time, light source, and dozens more categories help document every aspect of the shot. The program also provided features for rotating and cropping photos, which was a simple and easy addition to an already impressive package.

With its ability to dig into the technical nuances of a photo, this program will confuse novices and have experts jumping for joy. While its 15-day trial doesn't feel long enough, it's enough to know whether Picture Information Extractor is for you.

"This is not a trial, this is crippleware"

    April 2, 2011  |   By robogun

    Version: Picture Information Extractor 5.97d

    Pros

Installed well, looks good for batch captioning and IPTC tagging of quantities of photos. Description promised a 15 day trial. Unable to actually test as save is disabled (crippleware).

    Cons

    Save-disabled functionality limits evaluation.

    Summary

If all you need to do is caption gobs of photos, this looks to be a viable alternative for Photo Mechanic, Lightroom etc and their high cost, complexity, huge memory requirements and activation. I would have purchased license right away if assured the generated tags would work with my web gallery software but for now still looking.

Recommendation to author would be to make the trial version able to work with maybe 12 photos at a time so workflow integration can actually be tested - no crippleware.

    Summary

The NEF (Raw camera format nikon ) Can be actually previewed in large size... and rather than opening every single image, user can select the image he wishes to open after previewing.

    "very poor."

    July 10, 2006  |   By do_rin_entertainment

    Version: Picture Information Extractor 3.61

    Pros

it is nice that the program acts like a picture viewer (has fullscreen etc).

    Cons

what i dislike at most is that it only recognises the EXIF data for jpegs. if they have additional data inside them, that data is not recognised. it does not take in account the "read only exif data" option. or it needs a system restart after each change of that option =)). anyway, i dont think that it can read other image data except exif.

the second major con i have is that IT DOES NOT HAVE AN UNINSTALL PROGRAMM !!! it is is in a new programm category (just for me) named SPAM PROGRAMMS (programms thay you install and you cant get off them).

at least they could have made a folder in start menu and place there somwhere an unwise shortcut... that won't be hard.
