Build a robust Linux install with dozens of functions and applications designed to work on hard drives. Building Parted Magic LiveCD requires a CD burning tool to create the bootable CD with the OS and functions.
Booting into the Linux OS offers numerous commands to work on your hard drive, and includes more functions than we could list here. Users should definitely take the time to surf to the publisher's Web site to study the CD's major applications before getting started. Some instructions are included with this package, but testers recommend only experienced users tackle this OS and applications. Many of the functions are easy to use, but improperly set actions could result in damage to your file structure. As the publishers note, this version of Parted Magic uses VisParted and Parted, but version 2.2 includes the more popular Gparted, a robust tool with the capability to change drive partitions without losing data.
Still, this version of the freeware is a powerful efficient tool to help experienced users manipulate their hard drives.

Version: Parted Magic LiveCD 3
"Terrific - Worked where others failed (v 3.5)"
Pros: Boots when DOS-based repair disks won't, contains huge collection of disk and partition test and repair programs in addition to partitioning programs. Contains TestDisk, an especially useful program, along with Clonezilla.
Cons: Documentation for the programs is sparse, even in the project wiki. The fortunate exception is TestDisk, which has a good walk-through in the wiki.
Summary: The project is now at version 3.5, and very impressive. I somehow messed up the geometry of my main hard drive while resizing one of its partitions. No boot thereafter - black screen, flashing cursor. I was able to boot from a Puppy Linux Live CD ... read more >>

Version: Parted Magic LiveCD 3
"Successful using the liveCD,"
Pros: I was able to partition the harddrive easily but the problem I have was that my win2000 was not able to see the whole drive. I will have to figure that one out.
Cons: no opinion.
Summary: This is a sata drive, it worked at one time but now Partition Magic and win2000 couldn't do anything with it (I think it has something to do with the FAT table being all mess up). At least now I got part of the drive back.

Version: Parted Magic LiveCD 3
"Free and worked perfectly on Windows 2003 Server"
Pros: Booting to the CD and resizing my root partition took a mere 5 minutes. It took longerr to burn the CD on my old writer.
Cons: Too bad you have to run it from CD
Summary: Worked perfectly, just had to Scandisk on booting, but after that it was seamless. I'm keeping the CD in my toolkit.

Version: Parted Magic LiveCD 3
"A versatile and useful utility"
Pros: The ability to deal with partitioning and data issues - I suffered a problem on an external hard drive and could not access my data (I could not even access the drive). Parted Magic provided a solution.
Cons: I have not found any downsides.
