Efficient and almost watertight, this Internet-filtering application helps put proper barriers on Web surfing at home or in a small business. ContentProtect is highly customizable, and able to block access to Internet sites that span a wide range of content, from job search engines or Web mail, to pornography or pop-ups. The program's pop-up blocker is effective. You can program blacklists and whitelists (banned sites and approved sites, respectively). A reporting feature is a useful tool and is effective in keeping track of the program's blocking success and attempts at site retrieval. The program is adequately protected by an administrator password, and couldn't be uninstalled (no matter how hard we tried during testing) with any current applications. Although a few banned sites got through its defenses during testing, overall ContentProtect is a robust filtering application that should keep surfing clean.

    "Not worth the price."

    November 02, 2013   |   By ldavidal

    Version: Net Nanny 6.5

    Pros

Relatively easy to navigate. Blocks objectionable websites.

    Cons

Version 7 is required for Windows 8. Seems to conflict with the Windows 8 controls. When a site is blocked or time is restricted, it is difficult to know which program is operating. I purchased program based on Cnet's review, before I had looked at Window 8 controls to provide protection for a 12 year-old god-daughter to whom I am giving a computer tomorrow. When Version 6.5 failed to block porn sites in Explorer but did in Chrome, I contacted NetNanny for an upgrade. 6.5 does not work with Windows 8. In retrospect, I would use the Windows 8 controls. I looks like the only benefit is remote monitoring of internet activity. Look carefully and you may save yourself some money.

"I had high hopes but it's been a BIG disappointment!"

    October 17, 2013   |   By REI_TTS

    Version: Net Nanny 6.5

    Pros

Installation was quick and easy. But after using it for less than a week, I'm so frustrated and disappointed.

    Cons

Android app - drains my battery in 4 hours and that's without using my phone at all! It is constantly running even when I'm not using a browser. Net Nanny DOES NOT monitor or filter what happens within an app (like Facebook or YouTube). WHY? It makes my phone run SUPER SLOW and sluggish! Apparently there is no way to disable the NN app to have save my battery. I can't be connected to my charger all day long...
Computer/Desktop - I have all my users set up but I can't figure out how to the user logged in (I have a different user for each child & adult). I've email tech support about it 3 times now and they've failed to respond that question. I have received email alerts from the computer but nothing from the mobile app. The reports you get are okay but not great. The online portal to check from anywhere doesn't work and doesn't display all the activity (which is not what was promised on their website). I have to go to each device or computer and log in as Admin to see the report.

    Summary

I forgot to mention that with the mobile app - first, it locks the setting on your phone so you can't access it and second, it changes alerts and notifications there were set up on the phone before no longer work after install. Why???? So sad and disappointed!

"Flat Out Doesn't Work on Mac or Social Media"

    September 13, 2013   |   By nelliesammy

    Version: Net Nanny 6.5

    Pros

None...unless spending money for something that doesn't work is a Pro for you.

    Cons

    - Didn't work on Mac
    - Didn't track messaging, e-mails or social media (as promised)
    - Remote "web admin" didn't work at all and never syncs to the computer's actual activity
    - E-mail Reports didn't work (even with correct settings)
    - Confirmed all my settings were correct with their tech team and the programs still didn't work...
    - Tech help is shoddy, at best
    - NO REFUNDS, even though their website says so at the top of the Return Policy page...but beware, scroll down and they disclaim any warranties or refunds unless you "accidentally" purchased it. My experience is that you will never get a refund, even if the programs don't work with you.
    - Spent 7 days working with tech to figure out their bugs, to no avail.
    - Did I mention the program didn't work?

    Summary

This program was terrible, and the Net Nanny Social program didn't work either. I worked with their tech team to get it to work, but ultimately requested my money back because the program neither monitored users on my Mac nor over the social accounts. Also, watch out because they will not refund your money unless you "accidentally" purchased the programs - so if it doesn't work, too bad, no refund.

The remote web admin doesn't work at all; it doesn't show any logs...just websites viewed, sometimes (not all websites viewed) and didn't monitor any messaging or e-mails. Social didn't even pick up any social media activity, when my daughter posts 10 times a day (at least) - and her accounts were linked via password and login...It's a great idea in theory, but the programs just don't work.

And, the tech team is unhelpful, slow to respond and not available after 5pm or on weekends (when we are all trying to figure this crap out...). Do not recommend. Try remote desktop or parental controls for mac instead - that's what I ultimately went with after uninstalling this crap software. Don't buy it. There are other options for Mac out there - I know they are harder to find, but don't give in to this one (at least while they are figuring out how to get their programs to actually work).

    "This software is abysmal!"

    March 16, 2013   |   By spenwa

    Version: Net Nanny 6.5

    Pros

I can't get past the cons

    Cons

TOO MANY CONS to list, but here's a start (We've had NN for at least 3 years):
    - when I allow kids to use facebook, they still CAN'T use it. My only option is to completely disable Net Nanny. So what the _____ is the point of having it!?!?
    - it's SO intrusive and in your face
    - when you allow a website that calls out to other domains for ads, those still get in your face. SO ANNOYING!
    - The company never updates their software, never seems to improve
    - Every time I try to get a simple report of what people have been looking at on the web, it tells me I need Flash 8 to view it. Then it lets me view it anyway. It wouldn't be so annoying if FLASH 11 WASN'T THE CURRENT VERSION!
    - I could go on. Just don't get it.

    Summary

Terrible. And I've tried to stick with it for THREE YEARS thinking they would improve things.

"By far the best parental control software in the market"

    December 18, 2012   |   By TommyLarson

    Version: Net Nanny 6.5

    Pros

    - Netnanny locks the SafeSearch on most websites including YouTube and Google which is the best feature ever. This feature is good because some kids could use an inappropriate keyword and then turn safe search 'off' and view porn through Google images but Net Nanny doesn't allow that. Net Nanny blocked all the loop holes.

    - Net Nanny has plenty of features and options to choose from; it has all the features that a parental control should have

    - You have the option to censor profanity

    - You have the option for time control

    - You have the option to block not only porn but other adult websites.

    - They have a website were you could add brand new websites that should be blocked: www.netnanny.com/support/accuracy

    - Net Nanny staff respond to all my emails

    - price of the Net Nanny parental control software is not bad but it worth every penny

    Cons

    - Sometimes Net Nanny automatically unlocks safe search of Google images which is rare. I emailed Net Nanny and they said I'm the only person who has this problem. They said it might be an extensions or add-ons of my browser that may interfere with Net Nanny. I usually fix the problem by completely closing my browser or restarting the computer.

    Summary

Net Nanny is by far the best parental control software in the market. I recommend Net Nanny ( version: 6.5.13.2) and newer to parents who want to block pornography and other inappropriate websites because based on my tests Net Nanny is by far the best parental control software in the market

"Great at monitoring social networks and alerting me..."

    August 03, 2010   |   By BenSwivel

    Version: Net Nanny 6.5

    Pros

    - lots of features
    - easy to setup
    - works well
    - gives a ton of peace of mind

    Cons

    - it's not free
    - it blocks a lot of facebook pages because of on page vulgarity... makes it hard to navigate facebook without deactivating the filter (guess I could change the facebook setting though)

    Summary

If you want to set up safeguards for your family then I'd recommend this software. While it does have great parental control tools, it is still necessary to talk to your kids and let them know what/why you're putting Net Nanny on the computer.
