This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />LightZone has an interesting and probably more intuitive approach to tonal adjustments than Photoshop, but that's really all it has going for it. The remainder of its controls are very limited in what they can do when you compare them to the current versions of ACR or Lightroom, and the fact that it's written in Java is reason enough for me to write it off entirely. Performance is admirable for a Java application, but it's still pretty abysmal, and the cross-platform UI leaves much to be desired. I also object to its spline based region definition tools which offer little in the way of precision and encourage sloppy retouching. Feathered seams are still seams, folks. If it was maybe 1/4th as expensive as it is, I'd consider recommending it to clients who struggle with the curves dialog regularly, but even then, I'd never buy it myself.

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />This is a fabulously intuitive and quite powerful way to manipulate digital images. I am especially pleased with how much easier it is for me to adjust my monochrome images. I am one of those who left the darkroom but have been having trouble finding the way... Very complex and effective adjustments are easy to make using LightZone and with some digging and thought, some very advanced techniques are also available. I have had some crashing issues, but saving after every step or two has reduced this to a minimum. It is obviously a very resource intensive app. I'm running a dual 1.3mh G4 (upgraded Sawtooth) with 1.5gb of memory. I highly recommend this app to anyone interested in traditional image manipulation. I bought it :))
