Diskeeper 2011 automatically takes care of hard-disk fragmentation as it occurs, making the manual defragmenters we're all accustomed to a thing of the past. For any Windows users experiencing a lag in hard-disk performance, this hassle-free tool is a fantastic option.

Shortly after installation, Diskeeper analyzes all the volumes on your computer. The data it collects is used as a baseline for the Performance Reports it generates from that point on. These reports let you know how many fragments the program has eliminated as well as how, exactly, it has improved your PC's performance. While most users won't care too much about most of the statistics, it is admittedly comforting to know that the data is there.

Diskeeper is an effective tool mainly because of two core features: Automatic Defragmentation and IntelliWrite. Automatic Defragmentation can be set to either Efficient, which scrubs your disk piecemeal as needed, or Extensive, a more thorough process. The program recommends Efficient, as do we.

IntelliWrite is enabled by default for all volumes on your computer. It's extremely effective at eliminating fragments as they occur, and we think it's the biggest selling point of the software.

One thing we felt could be improved upon was Diskeeper's main interface. In our opinion, it displayed way too much information, and when it first opened we didn't know where to start. For novice users, this can be alienating. We would have liked a more streamlined experience with clearer road maps for typical processes. Meanwhile, every icon in the toolbar opened up a new window, which was infuriating. Perhaps a simpler, tabbed interface would've been better. Luckily, Diskeeper does most of its work in the background, which means you don't have to deal with the interface much anyway.

Overall, we think Diskeeper 2011 is a winner. Its user interface may be overwhelming or confusing to non-technical types, but that doesn't overshadow what it's got going on under the hood. Its IntelliWrite technology eliminates most fragments as they occur, while its Automatic Defragmentation function catches the rest. It's a mostly hassle-free experience and you can still run a manual defragmenter if you feel the need.

Diskeeper is available free to try for 30 days and for $39.95 thereafter.

From Diskeeper:

Diskeeper data performance technology keeps systems free of fragmentation and delivers critical site-wide system efficiency automatically and cost effectively. Significantly increase the speed and reliability of even the busiest and most mission critical laptops, workstations, servers and enterprise servers--and make your budget go much further.

Key benefits: Systems reach peak speeds without compromise. Major I/O waste is eliminated, reducing resources needed by an average of 40%. Backups 30% faster. Overall system stability increased 30%. System longevity extended an average of two-and-a-half additional years. Site-wide energy reduction of 12%.
Exclusive IntelliWrite technology: The O/S activity of writing files in pieces to the disk (fragmentation) can be prevented before it happens--up to 85%. Extremely valuable for thin provisioned storage and SAN as well as all other systems.

What's new in this version:

  • Instant Defrag engine. A new intelligence that understands how files are used and immediately defrags the ones that will be used right now.
  • Efficient Mode. A completely new algorithm that achieves rapid peak performance with the absolute minimum I/Os. Efficient Mode detects and handles only problem fragmentation and eliminates unnecessary extra effort to get to a state of 0 total fragments.
  • InvisiTasking technology. Now able to deploy even more idle resources to Diske... See all new features

"Bait and switch pricing scheme ruins it alltogether."

    Version: Diskeeper 2011

    Pros

    Works fantastic.

    Cons

39.95 offer as stated by CNET is not honored by Diskeeper, that's why you can't click a buy now link at CNET. It's 59.99. That's just insulting.

    Summary

    Don't even go there.

    "Does the job and intelligently"

    July 30, 2011  |   By jlauret7

    Version: Diskeeper 2011

    Pros

A "set it and forget it" product, does the job when needed by monitoring fragmented reads. All documented features work as expected.

    Cons

Interface is confusing - I personally like seeing blocks in color for fragmented files, system files and so on and as a main window. This would appear only on an analyze and the view is rudimentary.

    Summary

Diskeeper 2011 delivers on promises and the impact on system performance, in my testing, is negligible. The continuous defrag mode seem to monitor reads and especially, fragmented reads - the file is then de-fragemented avoiding performing the job on files which you would never read again (or in your trash folder or other temporary areas). The configuration and documentation is clear enough - I would have liked the VSS mode to be enabled by default (rather that asking me to enable it) but this is fine. The GUI is a bit clumsy, bringing to front view what I do not need to know - I would prefer to see a drive map of fragments rather than big letters bringing me a commercial spill on IntelliWrite (not even informative - why is this banner taking screen space?) but such is their choice - on the positive sides, the product provides lots of graphs, performance matrix and statistics (perhaps for advanced users).
Most importantly, it works ... and all the features are performing as advertized.

    Pros

Fit and forget. Works quietly in the background. Manual/scheduled defrags are history.

    Cons

    None so far

    Summary

On the expensive side, but really is value for money. Has improved my machine efficiency by 41%.

    "The Truly Install n' Forget"

    June 17, 2011  |   By b82rez1

    Version: Diskeeper 2011

    Pros

Prevents fragments from happening in the first place, and works when CPU usage is idle or low, meaning you can do light duty stuffs without stopping it from working like other disk defraggers. You never have to manually defrag your HDD every.

    Cons

It does its work so well, that nobody realizes that it exists inside the pc.

    Summary

No matter what operating system you use, it will soon be effected by fragments. If you never want to care about that, just install Diskeeper and forget the word fragment.

    "Diskeeper is Great!"

    June 16, 2011  |   By harveymoskat

    Version: Diskeeper 2011

    Pros

Prevents most fragmentation before it happens. This in itself puts diskeeper miles ahead of other defraggers! Hyper-fast is very handy for keeping your ssd in top shape.

    Cons

You do have to pay for it but that is ok for very good software. I don't really trust freebies these days!

    Summary

    Highly recommended
