CNET Editors' review
It's not going to win any design awards, but this handy program for monitoring your PC's bandwidth usage offers a nice set of features. BitMeter's floating graph with simple text displays for real-time downloads and uploads is easy to follow. You can customize the display's color and transparency.
Considering its size, BitMeter provides an impressive amount of options and information. You can view summaries of network activity with hourly, daily, and monthly breakdowns, or receive audio notifications that can be set by transfer size and direction. The built-in calculator is useful for computing the speed and size of download and upload activities. You can create automatic or manual backups of the program to easily restore history and settings, and there's an ISP Restrictions configuration panel that can configured with a minimum of hassle.
This freebie is easy enough for any user looking for a simple and effective tool for monitoring network activity.

"Excellent within its limitations"
Version: BitMeter 2 3.5.10
Pros
Can quite accurately record internet bandwidth, within 95% of what Windows reports.
Records speed and usage per hour, day and month in a table and in graphical format, very useful for record keeping and usage analysis.
Highly customizable appearance and graphical window size, best interface of the 5 or so other similar utilities I have tested, also one of the most reliable, and free on top of that.Cons
Difficult to make it only record internet bandwidth. By default, it records non-internet bandwidth and other network use such as wireless printing and file transfers.
Does not work on a connection basis but on a machine basis. Ignores other machines on the network such as a second computer or Wi-Fi smartphone usage.
Unresolved bug occasionally locks up the CPU and requires a task kill to stop and a reboot to properly restart. Developer has abandoned the standalone version in favour of a much less useful browser based model.
If the program crashes, history file holding all records can get overwritten. As a result, months of logs can be overwritten. A daily backup of the three copies of BitmeterHistory.xml and the two copies of BitmeterSettings.xml file is recommended.Summary
An excellent utility that is highly customizable, has excellent recording facilities, generally works very well and is quite accurate (approximately 95%) for using internet connection bandwidth when the only bandwidth is the internet and there is only a single machine on the network.
Measures all bandwidth, including printers and network file transfers, is difficult to setup to ignore non internet bandwidth and is totally blind to usage from other devices on the network. Occasionally locks up the CPU. Development abandoned in favour of a much less useful web based model.
After having used it for several years, I can say that this is an excellent utility as long as you understand its limitations. One of the best available. -
"CPU hog even on Win 7 x64 with 4Gb RAM"
Version: BitMeter 2 3.5.10
Pros
It does what it says.
Cons
Used 30% of my CPU on a brand new win7 x64 w/ 4Gb RAM. Caused my audio playback streams to glitch.
Summary
I also suspect the accuracy of the totals. I uninstalled it.

"So far so good"
Version: BitMeter 2 3.5.10
Pros
Seems excellent. Was looking for a replacement for NetLimiter which for some reason does not show stats on my 7/64 machine. BitMeter seems like a good replacement - though it does not (and is not designed to) show which applications are using bandwidth. That apart gives good indication of current and historical usage.
Cons
None yet. Green color of upload graph is a bit hard to see.
Summary
Does the job it is designed to do very well

"Very helpful to see how much bandwidth you are using"
Version: BitMeter 2 3.5.10
Pros
Simple to use
Cons
Can't think of any yet
Summary
You can tell ISP's they are full of it: especially wireless ISP's who think that 5 Gb is a Lot of Data: Using this programs stopwatch, I was able to see that Netflix uses about 1.5 Gb per hour.

"Perfect, very handy"
Version: BitMeter 2 3.5.10
Pros
Easy on resources if this is an issue.
Cons
No app for my stupid iphone.
Summary
Having to use my iphone as my main internet connex for the laptop and ps3 gaming, having this wonderful little utility running ensures I stay within my data usage. I wish the creator would make a version for the iphone itself as there are no decent apps that keep track in realtime, I have wasted $.99 on "Data Usage" but it's garbage.
An excellent product. -
"Exactly what I was looking for."
Version: BitMeter 2 3.5.10
Pros
Everything that it claims to do.
Cons
The looks can be improved upon.
Summary
Go for it.
Wonderful application! Have been using it for the past few months now and it is a permanent fixture on my screen. Looking at the graph alerts me instantly on whether anything is being downloaded or uploaded from/to my system, at what speed, and how much. Particularly useful for those who are on limited internet usage plans and need to be cautious about how much they download . Works perfectly with my LAN internet connection, but haven't been able to find a way of making it work with my datacard internet connection. I highly recommend this app to all internet users.
