OpenOffice has come a long way after racing to improve its compatibility with Microsoft Office. If you're looking for Microsoft-caliber applications for free, OpenOffice has alternatives to Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Access, and more.

Pros

Free: The most significant feature of OpenOffice is that it's free -- no subscription fee, no lump sum, no upsell to a pro version. If your business needs don't include complex word-processing or database-management features, then OpenOffice is a bargain.

Compatibility: OpenOffice supports the same file formats as rival programs like Word and Excel. Those coming from Microsoft will be pleased to hear that Office files work in OpenOffice, too.

Function: For most basic uses, OpenOffice holds its own. Math allows you to create basic charts and cell-dependent calculations just like Excel, and most useful features from Microsoft Word also appear in Writer, including spell checkers and most text-formatting options.

Cons

Not for heavy Excel users: Expert spreadsheet manipulators will find it hard to live without compatibility with Visual Basic for Applications, especially if your macro functions depend on Microsoft's environment.

Poor presentations: If you create the most basic of presentations, Impress will suffice. But PowerPoint holds a large lead when it comes to variety in designs, templates, transitions, and collaborative features. Though OpenOffice can open PowerPoint files, don't expect the transitional effects to import.

Bottom Line

Apache OpenOffice vs. Microsoft Office: The question isn't which suite has better features (that's Microsoft's), but rather whether the open-source suite has enough features for your work. Microsoft offers affordable pricing for Office 365, a subscription model that puts Office on just about every device you can imagine. But if you're looking to save a few bucks and don't need all the fancy support of Office, then OpenOffice's core offerings will get the job done.

"Somehow it slowed down my laptop"

January 22, 2015  |  By bantragh88

 |  Version: Apache OpenOffice 4.1.1

Pros

Worked as well as you may expect from a free word program to a certain point

Cons

Seemed to cause severe issues (lagging and freezing) to my laptop; frequent crashes and randomly DELETED MY SEVERAL THOUSAND WORD THESIS :( ?!!

Summary

I've been using openoffice for a couple of years. On my old laptop it posed no problems, except that it would crash every now and again. When I got a new laptop however, it would crash randomly all the time and take a while to recover files, or only allow me to open a 'copy' of my original file. This morning was the final straw when it crashed and turned off my laptop. When i turned it back on again my several thousand word thesis had been erased somehow!! When I clicked to open the file there was a blank space, even though I had been sure to save it often. I promptly uninstalled openoffice and downloaded a different brand of software. To my surprise my laptop, which had been lagging and freezing frequently, even while trying to use the internet (despite being only 5 months old!) was restored to a fast-acting and back to normal new computer. I can only assume this was thanks to uninstalling the program, although I have no idea why. I'm just thankful that I won't have to go through that nightmare again and can now use my laptop properly!!

"Wish more people were aware of it :("

January 15, 2015  |  By ganerd

 |  Version: Apache OpenOffice 4.1.1

Pros

almost everything ... it IS the number one in office systems.

Cons

1. Although it is a pretty complete system, the extensions are not plentiful enough and not updated enough. Sade for such a good system. Some has to be obtained from the site rather than Apache OOfice site. Apache is not as up-to-date as the old sponsor.
2. There is one bug the latest version has, seems you cannot use the auto--save as this causes crashes about every 20 hours of use.
3. There is a missing feature, was a great little desktop publishing wizard that USED to be available for 3.3 version.

Summary

Really a good system considering it is free. Having taught MS products, including Office, I would never go back having tried this now. I have not found much this will not do.

Updated on Jan 15, 2015

BTW, I am an ACTUAL OOffice user having used this since the 3.0 version. and even wrote a book with it on a no longer available Desktop Publishers wizards.

"Doesn't do what it claims"

December 30, 2014

 |  Version: Apache OpenOffice 4.1.1

Pros

Does do the basic word processing.

Cons

Does not build data bases because it constantly claims it needs a java app open and connected to do it.....for what??? used to be you could scan a sheet with numbers and names to it and it would add them into the business address book, needless to say I have java up and running on my computer. So given the other reviews......I think before I lose an important document. UNINSTALLED.

"Was great, now it's useless half the time."

December 16, 2014  |  By spiritedaway96

 |  Version: Apache OpenOffice 4.1.1

Pros

In the beginning it had tons of pros, now it has practically none.

Cons

Crashes, loses important documents occasionally, won't open some files than decides to open them hours later.

Summary

I downloaded this application about a year ago, only using it occasionally, and it worked great. There were no crashes, I was able to save files and open files just fine. However, at the time I was maybe using it once or twice a week. Now, at my new school, I use this application everyday needing to save and open downloaded files three to five times a day. It worked great my first month of school (late August to early September), but then it started freezing and crashing while I'm in the middle of important assignments, sometimes when I reopened the application after the crash it either didn't save my file or gave me a pop-up saying my file couldn't be retrieved and I'd have to do assignments all over, when I go to open a document I know saved and clearly says in my computers documents that it is saved it says the document no longer exists, and when I download and open assignments it either won't open or says there's an error with the file. When the assignment doesn't open (even though I've tried every few minutes to open it) it finally opens hours later. I would not recommend this application to anyone I know who needs to use a word document consistently. I'm planning on deleting this application and going with another word document application.

"Good not great!"

November 08, 2014  |  By pickycustomer

 |  Version: Apache OpenOffice 4.1.1

Pros

None anymore. See summary.

Cons

Apache has started a smear campaign against LibreOffice.

Summary

I have previously submitted a review of AOO but things have changed.

I have noticed that Apache has started a smear campaign against LibreOffice. Apparently Apache has seen large numbers of their loyal user base leave for LibreOffice due to the fact that LO can do more and is more stable. They, Apache, have been stating the number of people using LO is inflated and have skewed the data to prove they are correct. If Apache wanted to prove that AOO is better they should base the facts on how much better AOO is over LO. Happily these tactics never work. In stead what Apache should do is to improve their product and not attack the competition with unproven allegations and/or numbers.. I wish Apache better luck on proving they are better when virtually every "expert" reviewer has written about how much better LibreOffice is than Apache OpenOffice. The truth is in the software and not based on a smear campaign.

"OpenOffice 4.1.1 fails to install"

November 02, 2014  |  By numbersguylanc

 |  Version: Apache OpenOffice 4.1.1

Pros

I love OO but cannot get this one to install. Big bug!

Cons

You may get an error message that says you do not have sufficient rights to install software even if you have admin rights in windows. It will tell give you this file location C:\program files\openoffice4\share\registry\res It will rollback the install BUT you will no longer have OpenOffice...so be sure you really want to install this update. I'm now searching the Internet for the older version.
