If you're looking for Microsoft-caliber applications for free, OpenOffice has alternatives to Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Access, and more. OpenOffice has come a long way after racing to improve its compatibility with Microsoft Office.

Pros

Free: The most significant feature of OpenOffice is that it's free -- no subscription fee, no lump sum, no upsell to a pro version. If your business needs don't include complex word-processing or database-management features, then OpenOffice is a bargain.

Compatibility: OpenOffice supports the same file formats as rival programs like Word and Excel. Those coming from Microsoft will be pleased to hear that Office files work in OpenOffice, too.

Function: For most basic uses, OpenOffice holds its own. Math allows you to create basic charts and cell-dependent calculations just like Excel, and most useful features from Microsoft Word also appear in Writer, including spell checkers and most text-formatting options.

Cons

Not for heavy Excel users: Expert spreadsheet manipulators will find it hard to live without compatibility with Visual Basic for Applications, especially if your macro functions depend on Microsoft's environment.

Poor presentations: If you create the most basic of presentations, Impress will suffice. But PowerPoint holds a large lead when it comes to variety in designs, templates, transitions, and collaborative features. Though OpenOffice can open PowerPoint files, don't expect the transitional effects to import.

Bottom Line

Apache OpenOffice vs. Microsoft Office: The question isn't which suite has better features (that's Microsoft's), but rather whether the open-source suite has enough features for your work. Microsoft offers affordable pricing for Office 365, a subscription model that puts Office on just about every device you can imagine. But if you're looking to save a few bucks and don't need all the fancy support of Office, then OpenOffice's core offerings will get the job done.

"Time to move on"

November 01, 2016  |  By liverpool_computers

2016-11-01 16:43:22  |  By liverpool_computers

 |  Version: Apache OpenOffice 4.1.2

Pros

* Was a great piece of software in its time

Cons

* In 2011, after Oracle bought Sun, most of the OpenOffice developers jump ship and started LibreOffice.

Summary

Used to be a great office suite, but after 5 years of neglect its best to follow the developers to LibreOffice.

"Too many bugs"

June 06, 2016  |  By tropicsrfer

2016-06-06 06:29:34  |  By tropicsrfer

 |  Version: Apache OpenOffice 4.1.2

Pros

Free compared to overpriced MS Office

Cons

Too many bugs in Windows 8.1.

Summary

Too many bugs in Windows 8.1. I pasted a document from MS Word and only the header would print.

Then when I tried to close OpenOffice, it would not close. It's the first time I've ever seen a program do that. I looked it up and lots of others have had the same problem.

Forget it, I'm going to try LibreOffice, hopefully they have fixed this bug.

"Apache OpenOffice is a great alternative to Microsoft"

April 21, 2016  |  By vin52comp

2016-04-21 16:44:40  |  By vin52comp

 |  Version: Apache OpenOffice 4.1.2

Pros

This free office suite has six powerful applications that are just as good as Microsoft's, but the suite is 100 percent free. I enjoy writing letters, memorandums, and APA research paper; therefore, I find the word processing program to be exactly what I need. Apache Impress is similar to PowerPoint, and the presentation application works quite well and very nice animations, transitions, etc. Apache OpenOffice Calc is similar to Microsoft Excel and I enjoy using the functions in calc.

Cons

I cannot think of any.

Summary

If you are looking for an Office Suite that has most of the features like Microsoft Office, but is one-hundred percent free, then choose Apache OpenOffice. You will not be disappointed.

"Great free word processing"

March 11, 2016  |  By OldTechee

2016-03-11 09:38:18  |  By OldTechee

 |  Version: Apache OpenOffice 4.1.2

Pros

Compatible with PDF, Microsoft Word. Easy usage

Cons

It gets slow and cranky with very large documents

Summary

I've been using the program for years now, ever since I switched to a Mac. Originally I was running Microsoft Office under Windows (dual operating systemThe switch from set-up). After a few months, I realized that OpenOffice let me do everything that Office did - including reading and saving documents in Office and PDF format. I have not used it for anything but word processing, but it does a great job on that.

"Choices: Open Office, or get a sharp stick in the eye."

January 27, 2016  |  By skitchead

2016-01-27 13:12:43  |  By skitchead

 |  Version: Apache OpenOffice 4.1.2

Pros

Free.

But you get what you pay for - and after a month of constant crashes (4.1.2),
I'd prefer a sharp stick in the eye. Seriously.

Cons

After 30 years of computing (first PC was a one piece Eagle IBM clone), I have finally found the most unstable program ever written for PC. I was trying to update my order sheet so I could put my order in - while the salesman waited - he kept laughing because the program crashed 4 times in a half hour.

My main concern is that I can't use Excel to import the file - nor can I use Open Office to save the file in Excel's format - it crashes every time.

Totally useless for a 475 kb 9 page workbook.

Has it always been like this?

Summary

I wish I had never tried this software.

"Useless spell checker"

January 11, 2016  |  By Jer19671

2016-01-11 20:09:19  |  By Jer19671

 |  Version: Apache OpenOffice 4.1.2

Pros

Useful feature for general use

Cons

Unstable where the spellchecker is concerned.

Summary

I have used this extensively for over a year now, and have generally been very happy with it. However, for no apparent reason, the spell checker has gone haywire over the last week or two. It seems to be a major problem with Open Office. It has started to show every single word as being spelt wrongly! Even documents that have been previously stored are now showing up as having every word in them wrongly spelt! I can see no reason for this, and have found no help whatsoever in the forums etc. I shall now be deleting Open Office from my PC and getting something else, as it clearly cannot be relied upon. Do not use Open Office if you need something reliable for business use.

"Unintuitive, unstable, and kind of obnoxious"

December 01, 2015  |  By jjaniero

2015-12-01 22:01:21  |  By jjaniero

 |  Version: Apache OpenOffice 4.1.2

Pros

the program is free

Cons

disorganized, visually poor, too many error messages and glitches, works poorly with other document formats.

Summary

Not a very likable program. WordPerfect and MSWord (as much as I dislike MS products) are far superior.

"crashes constantly with tables, large files"

November 28, 2015  |  By irritatecustomer

2015-11-28 06:41:13  |  By irritatecustomer

 |  Version: Apache OpenOffice 4.1.2

Pros

free alternative to MS Office.

Cons

Unstable, poorly tested, crashes constantly with tables and large files.

Summary

Don't bother with it. Oracle clearly has stopped testing it properly. I switched to Libre Office (a branch of OO), which is very stable and runs much, much quicker.
