• OK, but FAR from perfect, OneNote replacement.

  Pros

  Allows links to files on your HD Allows attachments to files on your HD EASY tree type organization of Notes Reasonably intuitive user interface. Can export the entire db or individual notes as HTML or LaTeX files among others. you can select and copy a web page and paste to a note pretty easily

  Cons

  Search within a given note record good but I can't get it to search for a word or phrase across ALL records. REALLY needs this option. I can't seem to get the Help file to come up in Win7

  Summary

  Note databases are becoming important to information workers. They allow you to make notes, save web pages, and basically do research and store (and RETRIEVE) that information in a quick and easy manner. If your notes lend themselves to a tree structure of organization, this is an excellent program. For instance, I wanted a place to store good recipes suitable for diabetics. So I created a Zim Wiki database for recipes each main page is the source of the recipe and then I use subpages for individual recipes. I could (and may) have intermediate subpages for more classifications such as Entrees, meats, etc. but for now, it's just Source/recipe for me. This works well, unless I want to search across the entire database for a specific ingredient. I haven't figured out how to do it. And the search instructions in the help file seem to say you can only search within a given note. It seems to me, if you are going to use the term "Wiki", a multiple record search for phrases and words should be mandatory. I don't know why I can't bring up the help file in Win7 by pressing the F1 key or by clicking the help menu. But I can't. I CAN bring up the ABOUT menu selection, click on the 'go to web site' link, and go to the documentation page on their web site. As a workaround, that is unnecessarily clunky and slow. Writing this review has helped me solidify my ambivalent feelings towards Zim Desktop Wiki. I will continue to use it until I find something better.
