Manage, view, and search files in a tabbed, dual-pane mode.
Xplorer2 is a file and information manager that adheres to the philosophy efficiency through simplicity. The Ultimate edition features portability where you can keep your xplorer2 ultimate in a USB stick and have it save the settings in a portable file, without touching the windows registry. The ultimate version has the edge on xplorer2 professional, especially for large scale file operations. The ultimate version can either be copied to any folder or be run from any removable media
Allows you to change the background color in a file explorer window, which cannot be done in Windows Explorer (it has the tiring white background color). Free of the file search bug that is present in Windows Explorer (if you are searching for files that contain your search word in the file name, Windows Explorer cannot find the files where the file name does not start with your search word).
In contrast to WindowBlinds, Xplorer2 does not crash the operating system (although the program sometimes crashes itself).
Cons
Not very stable. I have Windows 8, 64-bit version; I have never seen Windows Explorer crash. In contrast, Xplorer2 crashes every few days, especially when I launch the Control Panel.
Summary
I went back to Windows Explorer and reduced the size of its Window, to minimize the unpleasant white color. The search bug can be solved if you insert an asterisk before a search word (you have to do 2 searches each time: the search word alone to find files whose names start with your search word; and the search word with the asterisk at the beginning in order to find files where the search word is in the middle of the file name).
You can change the white background color in most programs (except Windows Explorer) in Windows 8 as follows:
1) Edit the registry at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Colors, "Window"="170 170 170"
Reboot. This step #1 is unreliable and stops working for no reason even without a log off or screen saver. Step #2 below seems to be the permanent solution.
2) Edit the registry at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Themes\DefaultColors\Standard
"Window"=dword:00999999
Rebooting is not necessary. After you apply your unsaved or saved theme that contains step #1, the next time it fails, it will fall back on step #2 for good.

Generous number of commands, bunch of added features in every update. I feel guilty still using the lite version. A powerhouse even in the lite version.

Multiple files drag and drop needs improvement, nevertheless second best is years behind.
Summary
Not bad, but limited function free version asks you to buy the "pro" upgrade.
