WebMail Notifier for Firefox is a basic add-on that checks e-mail for a variety of different types of e-mail accounts. There's nothing particularly exciting about it, but it works just fine if you need a simple e-mail alert that's well integrated with Firefox.

The program appears as a small envelope icon within Firefox's status bar. It's quite inconspicuous, which is nice. When there are unread messages the envelope turns from gray to yellow, and the number of messages appears to the right. An optional pop-up window shows a brief preview of newly received messages. We liked that the add-on has some options for customization; users can select their own alert sounds and can also choose how frequently they want the notifier to check for new messages. WebMail Notifier also supports a variety of different e-mail providers, including Gmail, Hotmail, and Yahoo, and users can configure the application to check multiple e-mail accounts. Users can also create scripts to check for e-mail in accounts that aren't supported, although if you don't already know how to do this, don't expect any guidance. The add-on doesn't do any fancy tricks, but it's an excellent choice if you're looking for a basic, easy-to-use utility that will let you know when you have new mail.

WebMail Notifier for Firefox is free. Like most browser add-ons it doesn't come with a Help file, but it's pretty easy to figure out. It installs and uninstalls without issues. We recommend this program to all users.

Works great to notify of new emails in background

Pros
The latest 3.x version works fine (previews reviews 'Cons' have all been addressed... if properly installed and configured). Runs in the background and provides colorful count (number) of new emails on the single X-Notifier envelope icon. Also has an -optional- 'toolbar' that can show individual accounts... (off by default). Comes with major email provider scripts embedded in program... also allows for many custom scripts downloadable from support site for various other email providers. And has built-in scripts to support POP3 or IMAP access. Can customize default check interval or per-each-account checking interval. Can customize sound alerts, and choose either inbox-only or include other folders of webmail accounts. Supports other email features, like multiple accounts with a provider, etc. Available several browsers (except Internet Explorer)... Mozilla version for Firefox, Sea Monkey, Thunderbird... other versions for Chrome, Opera, Safari 6.
Cons
Not all optional features are available from Options menu... some features require edit of configuration file (Mozilla version... Firefox, Sea Monkey, Thunderbird).
Summary
A very customizable email checker that runs in the background when you have browser open... and notifies user of new email count for multiple emails. Has optional toolbar and allows for creation of custom scripts to access non-webmail email providers, as well as those accessible by POP3 and IMAP... and other account providers such as Twitter, Facebook, deviantART, LinkedIn, etc. If you have trouble setting it up, support forum is a great place to get troubleshooting help.

Pros
It's relatively simple to set up for accounts with various email providers. It's constantly updated to keep up with changing webmail provider logins... which does take some effort.
Cons
My major fault of it, is that there is no 'stand-alone' version... or for Internet Explorer. (There are versions for Firefox, Thunderbird, Chrome and Opera.)
Summary
Works well to both check for emails (displaying number), and to pop open a tab (or email client program) into your account.
It doesn't help me to check mails on Window 7 64-bit

Summary
Every time restarting FireFox, it pops up an login verification for the account I would like to check mails. But nothing happens. I still have to manually login onto yahoo or gmail and check mails myself. Then what is the point having it? Even I turn on its Webmail toolbar, what I got is the link to yahoo or gmail. Clicking on the link brings me the yahoo mail page or gmail. It is just a bookmark to me. Thus, it is absolutely useless. What I can think of is that it may not support Firefox 4 on Windows 7 64-bit.

It still notifies as well as ever

Adds very obtrusive icons and text to the bookmark area at the top of the Firefox browser. I don't like toolbars being installed without asking and with no way in the add-on's options of being turned off.
Summary
All the developer says in response to the complaints is "You can disable it in firefox menu." He doesn't even say WHERE in the menu. I had to find out from some other kind soul that it was found in View > Toolbars. Not good PR. The bottom line of the bottom line: Don't "upgrade" to 2.7.4. Stay with the previous version, or perhaps find another program with better customer relations.

Pros
I like it a lot. I've had no problems with it, really. It notifies to my specs when I have new Gmail messages in any or all folders, and it will include your Gmail labels if you tell it to. The many options/settings are great.
Cons
It has given me a few "false positives," telling me that I had new mail, when I either did not, or had already read the new messages. Also a bit of trouble telling it to check two accounts at different intervals.
Summary
I'd give it 4.5 stars. I'd give it 5 if not for the reasons above. I really do find it very handy and a time-saver.
Intrusive. Once enabled can't locate disable feature.
