  Summary

  I've spent more time playing the 2008 games (with some updates) on PC than any other game I've owned since then. This game, like MDickie's other wrestling titles, is a platform for imagination.

  Summary

  I've already seen good reviews of this and I was trying to be positive when I booted up this... well, demo, I guess. The bottom line is, playing it just isn't fun. You don't get any instructions on how to play, but you'll eventually figure out the keyboard controls (A, S, Z, and spacebar, if I remember correctly), but it's just so oversimplified that it isn't fun. The graphics are a mixed bag- everything is almost TOO sharp, but then you get bits like sharp fonts on fuzzy signs in a fuzzy crowd with a fuzzy backdrop, or face textures made from a photograph standing next to characters with MDickie's standard love-it-or-hate-it cartoonish textures, and it just makes it seem weird at best. Having the characters scale up and down to "breathe" is also distractingly strange. Move animation is good, but transitions between states (lying down, kneeling, on one knee, to standing) is slow enough to drag a match down into the mud. After so many years of developing variations on the same game, it just seems like nothing's really new enough to be innovative or "revolutionary"- it's just an oversimplified port. However, some of the worst bits are the writing. Each match (at least of the ones I played before uninstalling) begins with a promo that you can't accelerate through even though it's text, but the writing isn't going to win any awards- not that wrestling promos are usually Shakespeare, but they certainly are compared to what you have to read here. Of particular note is Mat's in-game character noting that- and this isn't a direct quote but it's at least close- "it's like I flew everyone to paradise on a plane that I made with my bare hands, but everyone's complaining that they don't have a first-class ticket." This game isn't anywhere close to paradise. I imagine it's more tolerable on a tablet or other mobile device, and I understand that the PC conversion is almost an afterthought, but after promises of a "revolution"- it's even right there in the title- this feels like a step backwards in every way, and I definitely won't be snagging this for my iPad either.
