This small executable effectively splits large files into manageable segments, though the process takes a lot of time. WinSplit's interface isn't eye-catching, but navigating through its few buttons and check boxes shouldn't prove difficult for any level of user. You can easily choose files to split and specify the destination path for the file pieces. The program splits files by size, number of segments, or by keyword in text documents. It also creates batch files to reunite split files and for easy file sharing. We found splitting files easy to start, but the process was especially slow for graphic and other media files. The program can split files of up to 2GB, though we experienced program crashes splitting the larger files. System administrators and users who send many files through e-mail will find this application useful, but not perfect. WinSplit delivered the job as promised, though users should be prepared for a slow process and the occasional program crash.

Looks promising in XP. Good reviews in general.
Cons
Despite stating that it is "3.x compatible" this does not run in WFW3.11.
Summary
This shouldn't affect anyone who runs a normal computer...
Simple, stand-alone.. all-in-all, an excellent alternative file splitter.

Pros
It stands alone.. meaning, no need to install anything. Just unzip, and you're set to go.<p>The interface is so simple, it's.. well.. unbelievably simple!<p>If you don't know much about computers, and need to move about a large file, and only have one CD-RW to do it with, (like in my case) for instance.. this is the program for you!
Cons
If you wanted to split up a file into attachment-sized pieces, and send to a buddy of yours for whatever reason.. well, they'd need winsplit too, in order for them to be able to attach all the pieces together.<p>I don't know if there are any file splitters out there that lets someone join together split files, without having to install the program on their computer, though. So I wouldn't consider this a "con".

Pros
Firstly it was easily downloadable on dial up. I was really impressed with its file size of 22 kilobytes. I recommend this to dial up users. It is a great program which fulfils the aim. My plan was to break a 2MB file into two 1MB parts to fit on two floppy disks. But then I thought I would also need the program's size to be small too so I could fit that program into a floppy disk as well because I did not have the copy of the program at home and you need this program to join the files.Thanks

The user interface could use a touch up. It is a great program but the plain user interface lets it down.

Winsplit: Avoid being forced into the world of CD-Rs and Zip disks when you need to exchange large files between computers. WinSplit is a free utility that splits even 2GB files and more into e-mail or floppy-friendly bites, and re-joins the data into a single file at its destination. Three splitting options let you split the file by size, number of pieces, and at every instance of a particular word (when breaking up text files). There is also a feature that checks to ensure that all of the file pieces are an exact copy of the original.
