  Hard to be polite. Jumbles titles and songs within album, adds duplicates to everything, doesn't list entire library, totally unreliable for anything except screwing up

  Everything else. You can only keep an MP3 file like a song for a few days until there's an error. It's been like that with ANY other version.

  Summary

  I use Freegal (A legal way to get MP3s. Free + Legal. The library system I use has it.). Their MP3 files only last a few days until I can't play them anymore.

  It has potential, if only it had fewer problems it would be a great simple software to rip and organize.

  Cons

  It is chronically corrupted, my library is filled with duplicates of tracts and discs, no fixed pattern as to why. Opening WMP can take a long time, all other operations are stalled while it "updates library", no option to do this later or not at all. It is chronically corrupted (Windows Fixit does not help). It is often balky, taking a minute to allow me to edit a title. The message "Windows Media Player is Not Responding" is so common I think they should just change the name to WMPNR and it locks everything else up while it dithers. I'm looking for alternatives for my simple needs of copying audiobooks and cds for my ipod. Imagine, it is a struggle to do these simple tasks... and has been for years, someday Microsoft will fix the problems....

  Pros

  It can organize video and pictures as well as music in separate libraries. It has many options to tweak sound such as an equalizer, True bass DSP, volume normalizing and much more. It will play most common formats of video and audio. With a codec pack will play even more. It's free and built in to Windows 7. It's convenient.

  Cons

  Slower than many when updating libraries. Even with DSP and the like, the sound isn't really high quality compared to some others.

  Summary

  I have read the reviews and horror stories concerning WMP. In my experience I have had no corruption or deleting of my music files. As a matter of fact, my experience with WMP has been bug free (knock on wood). It is a little slow and could have better sound, but believe me I have tried much worse. If you are just an average user with an average library of music and no high end speakers or such, then this is probably all you will ever need. I prefer MusicBee and that is what I use, but I think WMP gets an undeserving 'face full of sand' by many people. Just my 2 cents.

  Nothing good if even after declining all the other trash it doesn't work.

  Doesn't work with Windows 8, and having to decline all the other waste of programmer's time.

  the best CD-ripping and CD(audio)-burning tool

  Cons

  it makes total mess with playlists = imports everything without any order , there are too many commands and they are tricky ,non-intuitive , and many of them are useless -they should be much simplier than they are = for example 'stars voting' on songs is useless because I simply delete songs which I dislike and I doubt anyone use that , and there are too many sound control options which make bad sound output if used all together .

  Every time I add music, one song or more, it crashes. I have to use the Fix-It device constantly due to "file corruption" ect. It takes hours to re-install my music. I almost forgot about its "Non Responding" constantly.

  Summary

  I have tolerated this version too long, about a year. It is getting no better. I hoped for an update to fix it, but not so far. I am going back to WMP 11.

  The interface is problematic. First, by default, the menu bar is hidden. Typical for MS and also for other newer programs. So how the hell are you supposed to do anything? Second, it tries to force me into those cockamamie "libraries" in Windows 7, so it's a bit difficult to locate the files I want to play. Another con --- not available for XP. I haven't tried other file types yet so I can't render judgment there. My guess is that they play fine, but I'll stick with VLC for everything other than .mov.

  Summary

  On my XP machine, VLC will not play the .mov files. Splash Lite is very choppy with them. On 32 bit 7, VLC is somewhat choppy but WMP 7 plays the .mov files perfectly as far as I can tell.

  Had to relearn interface AGAIN from WMP 11 to WMP 12. Waste of time. Windows 7 Windows Media Player 12 will not find metadata for albums. I have checked, unchecked and rechecked all the box in "Organize". I am connected to the internet. Another laptop with XP and WMP 11 can fine metadata. WMP 12 calls everything an "unknown album".

  Summary

  Do not waste time looking for a solution from Microsoft. I wasted at least 4 hours My solution to the problem - iTunes. It finds metadata perfectly. It can rip my CD so I can have MP3 files. Problem solved.
