Editors’ Review
NOAA Weather Free's mission is to present up-to-the-minute weather forecasts, radar images, and other weather data on your Android phone or tablet. This ad-supported app uses GPS to detect your location and display the most accurate available NOAA data.
Pros
Customizable interface: The Location Sidebar can be customized with different modes, including single and dual panes. Under Accessibility, a Color Blindness option adjusts colors to improve readability.
Graphs: The Hourly tab displays weather data like Temperature, Wind Speed, and Probability of Precipitation in color-coded graphs.
One-tap local radar: Radar settings let us Start Animated, show only current images, and select Image Type, including Base Reflectivity, Storm Relative Motion, and One-Hour Precipitation.
Cons
Busy Forecast tab: The main tab, Forecast, displays a week's worth of daily forecasts, including high and low temperatures. Though the data is clearly presented, the overall visual effect is a bit busy.
Radar delay: The free app delays radar access by 10 seconds. The paid upgrade removes the delay.
USA-only: Since this app relies on NOAA data and is limited to US locations, it's not for globetrotters.
No alerts: NOAA Weather Free apparently lacks options for receiving emergency weather alerts, such as an alert sound or email notification feature.
Bottom Line
NOAA Weather Free provides a quicker way to see the latest weather data than opening your browser or a more complicated app. We'd like to see weather alert options, but overall, NOAA Weather Free seems like a great tool for watching the weather.
