Did you ever wish you could create cool 3D images of cars, landscapes, and anything else you can visualize, only to choke at the price of 3D modeling software? High-quality 3D design tools are finally available as freeware, such as ThreeDify Designer Free, a scaled-back freeware version of 3Dify Designer, which some users will remember as ActiveSolid. This capable 2D- and 3D-modeling and rendering application has two operational modes, as a standalone tool and as an ActiveX object in Internet Explorer, Excel, PowerPoint, and other programs. We tried its standalone mode.

ThreeDify Designer Free's user interface bears a strong resemblance to other tools of its type, an Explorer-style window with multiple toolbars containing a wide range of controls for manipulating 3D objects in a variety of axes, viewing angles, and renderings. A tabbed console to the right of the main window gave us quick access to a Browse feature listing all our created 2D and 3D objects with checkboxes to deselect them; a Model tab for quickly adding shapes, lines, and objects to the view; a View tab that includes camera settings for recording still and video images of our models; and a very detailed Rendering tab for commands, options, materials, and lighting. The menu bar offers still more features, including an Advanced menu.

We jumped right into 3Dify Designer Free by clicking New to start a new project and then clicking Create to add a variety of 2D and 3D objects by simply selecting one, clicking the interface, and dragging a line to set the object's baseline dimensions. We could select a range of rendering options such as wireframe, flat shading, and several combinations. We could even add 2D and 3D text. We could change the scale, colors, thickness of the lines, background, and much more. The freeware obviously doesn't offer as much as the full version, which is also available as a free trial. But for beginners, home users, and anyone interested in trying 3D modeling, ThreeDify Designer Free is a great place to start.

Affordable modeler + 3D file viewer

I really like the ability to load multiple 3D files with different formats in a single session so that I can toggle each on and off (for comparison purposes). I also like the associative dimensions and perspective zooming.
Cons
Missing area selection capability.
Summary
I would recommend this app as an affordable modeler + 3D file format viewer. With a little twist, it can also be used for simple assembly design. However, it is missing several handy tools such as area select and printing, and hence my rating is 4 stars as opposed to 5.

The free tutorials are great. I used previous verisons, but this is the version I'll keep.
Cons
I wish the free version includes the Boolean operations. You have to but the pro-version to get it.

Pros
Hardware rendering mode really helps a lot on my mobile ATI5650 card. I can now view big model in real time in true perspective mode and with variety of rendering efferts (materials and textures)
Cons
I can import and modify existing models with different materials and textures. but I cannot apply new textures and materials to a mesh with no existing textures and materials.
Summary
Finally a stable & robust product with many great features. I used previous versions before. They looked like unfinished product. This version seems to be production grade and I'll keep using from now on. Keep it up.

See cons. Site gives the impression that one can create 2D images of some type of motor...not possible with the FREE version. Rendering looks like a 3 year old child drew it. No depth. Worse of all after a while the program locks up and must be restarted, of course all of your work is gone.

Thank you to the developers/company for offering a nice program for free. Good interface.
Cons
The main window is not re-sizable. When resizing it creates a weird vision. Can not find the way to end the polyline and when ends its close it, maybe needs Enter or Esc. with little changes and improvements this could be a great program.
Summary
Great 3D program with lots of potential. Willing to see some improvements.
Not to be used by beginners.

Install fine for a 30 trial.
Cons
Over 30 days of usage requires registration, and registration requires an attachment of a '.key' file emailed to them through your email system. This is a security problem.
Summary
I don't what is included in the required '.key' file, but almost all fire walls and virus protection software will block a '.key' from being sent over the Internet. This program is an obvious security risk.
