Textra SMS offers more than 800 up-to-date emojis, animated GIFs, and a customizable layout. It utilizes Lollipop Material Design, including a Dark Mode and the ability to set custom colors for contacts, bubbles, and notifications. Version 2.15 adds new themes, bubble colors, and other customizations, and a battery drain issue has been fixed.

Pros

Customize Look: Tapping Customize Look in the Settings let us quickly change text size, activate Dark or Black Mode, choose colors, and more.

Quick Compose: The new Quick Compose feature let us send messages from the Notifications Drawer.

Mobile contacts only: A nifty option shows only mobile contacts when composing new messages.

Blacklist: Long-holding a conversation and selecting "Blacklist" adds threads to the Blacklist.

Cons

Newer devices only: Textra requires Android 4.0.3 or above.

Big: At 3.4MB, Textra isn't a lightweight. Despite improved battery use, it may not be the best choice for memory-challenged devices or those who keep multiple apps open.

Bottom Line

Textra SMS is good looking and a good performer that can easily replace the default SMS/MMS app in the latest Android devices. If you're not happy with your current texting app or just want a better user experience, Textra SMS belongs on your shortlist of new apps.
