  Summary

  Tennis Elbow is a highly overrated game that's even more frustrating than it is fun. Seriously, in the time it takes you to learn the nuances of this game, you could learn how to play tennis in real life, and I'm not joking. I don't mind a good simulation, but this takes it too far, at least on its default settings: Get set for matches that go anywhere from ten minutes for one set, all the way up to an hour plus for a five-set match. My main source of frustration, however, is the AI that feels cheap and disjointed. Volleying opponents at the net take no time to recover, so they can reach all the way in one direction for a ball, then easily reach in the opposite direction to handle your return. Lobs are smashed back with ease, so that's not an option. Character speed on both sides are way too fast, so both you and your opponents can reach balls they should have no business reaching. Hit detection is terrible: Balls that look like they're on the ground or past an opponent are suddenly returned. There seem to be no rhyme or reason for double-faults, which occur even when you put no speed or angle on the second serve, which is supposedly a "100% safe" serve. Granted, double-faults will happen to everyone, but they only seem to happen at pivotal stages of the match. Matches also feel "staged", at least in certain parts, as if you lose a point you should have won, your opponent will sometimes make an immediate, uncharacteristic error as if to give you the point back. Plays feel pre-determined, as opponents go from missing everything and making constant errors, to hitting winners out of nowhere. I understand tennis is a game of momentum, and I could see if maybe the opponent got a second-wind after making an incredible shot, or winning an important volley, but most of the time, it just feels like it starts happening out of nowhere. So why come to a site just to write a long-winded complaint? Because the game has lots of potential. When you aim to be a simulation, and force players to play for hours just to get through a single calendar year in-game, then you are open to more minute critique than games that are more arcade-y...that's just a fact. The core of a great game is here, but there are just too many inconsistencies that detract from what could be a fun experience. And I'm sure the game comes with sliders and pages full of options that I could adjust to get the perfect difficulty for me, but that should be the developer's job, not mine. With just a few changes, Tennis Elbow could be an excellent tennis sim, but as it stands now it's just way too inconsistent and frustrating to be anywhere near fun.
