It's small, simple, easy to use, intuitive, and free. It allows you to set the device for the input, output, or system audio in two clicks and the volume level for each. All right from the menu bar. Did I mention you can do it all in two clicks?

This really should be bundled with OS X. You shouldn't have to download a separate application for this level of convenience.
