Editors’ Review
With Skype for iOS, you can make free worldwide calls, chat with friends, and even play games via chatbots.
Pros
Free video and voice calls: Skype-to-Skype calls are free, no matter where in the world the participants are located. Calling from the Skype app to a mobile number or landline, however, requires purchasing Skype Credits or a monthly subscription plan. Skype can handle group calls, but the number of video streams will vary, depending on your device and other factors.
Chat with contacts: In addition to handling calls, Skype lets you chat with contacts. You can send emojis and GIFs, exchange files, and snap and share photos.
Add contacts: While it's not a completely intuitive process, you can import contacts from your address book or add them manually. You can also add chatbots to play games, make travel plans, find movie times, and more.
Good call quality: While Skype has in the past been dinged for its call quality, the quality of our voice and video calls over a mobile network and several Wi-Fi networks was consistently fine, with no lag or dropped calls.
Simple interface: Skype's interface is easy to navigate, and you can initiate calls and text messages with a few taps. You also easily switch between front- and back-facing cameras during a call.
Cons
Not for teamwork: The consumer version lacks collaborative tools, such as screen sharing. If you want to collaborate with colleagues, you need Skype for Business, which starts at $5 per month per user.
No Facebook sign-in: Unlike the desktop and Web versions, the Skype for iOS app won't let you sign in via Facebook. Instead, you need to use your Skype name or your Microsoft account.
Bottom Line
While the video- and voice-calling field has become more crowded since Skype debuted in 2003, the iOS version of the long-running messaging app has kept pace, offering a solid way to make worldwide calls with an easy-to-use interface.
