• Great product, even better customer service.

  Pros

  First, my computer died late on a Sunday night when I had an important presentation the next day. Selkie let me recover my documents and not have to redo everything. And when I couldn't get it to install, the CTO of the company called me to help.

  Cons

  The selkie software wasn't able to burn a boot disc with my computer, but no worries. It is simple enough to do manually.

  Summary

  This product saved me a summer's worth of work and a heck of a lot of trouble. More importantly, I can't believe that a company would care so much about its customers to have someone on call - and an executive to boot - to troubleshoot installation issues. I was absolutely blown away. I hope they write other software. I'll buy it even if I don't need it, just to support their wonderful company.

• Selkie worked; another program I purchased did not

  Pros

  My computer crashed hard, couldn't be booted up in safe mode, and couldn't be repaired by my Windows install discs. I would have done almost anything to get access to the data on this broken machine- this Selkie program gave me access to ALL of it.

  Cons

  No cons- this program delivered, period.

  Summary

  I wanted my data and I needed my data. I am not a techie and yet I wanted my data so much that I was PREPARED to take apart my computer, remove a 160 gigabyte hard drive, void my netbook's warranty, and send the hard drive to a data retrieval professional. First I tried software solutions- I purchased a program called Spotmau Powersuite 2009. My intention is not to disparage here but to be honest, and I hope that you will excuse me for being honest- but the Spotmau program I bought- which I bought to retrieve data- proved to be ABSOLUTELY useless- worse than useless, because it wasted hours of my time, and it didn't allow me to retrieve one single file. I then purchased Selkie Rescue. Selkie Rescue did what it was supposed to do. This program gave me ALL of my data back. THIS SELKIE PROGRAM WORKED. Thank you Selkie, for actually doing what you say you are going to do.

  Pros

  I saw a flyer for Selkie at my school offering 50% off to students and tried it out. It got all my stuff back in the same structure as before. All I had to do was reformat my drive, transfer it back and all was good.

  Cons

  It took a little bit of time to transfer all the files over, I do have a lot of stuff on my computer. However I was able to get back my assignments right away before I did the entire transfer.

  Summary

  The program worked well and it was nice to only have paid $50 for it when it would've cost me a lot more somewhere else. I'd suggest it to other students.

  Pros

  I heard about Selkie from a friend and tried it out on my old co mputer that wouldn't boot and it worked great. I got everything back, even stuff I didn't remember was on the drive.

  Cons

  At first I wasn't sure how to connect from crossover cable, I first did it chose the basic mode but it didn't work, so I had to go back and use Advanced and then it worked.

  Summary

  I would reccommend Selkie, just make sure you read the on screen instructions. Other than that it worked as it should and got everything back from my old computer.

  Pros

  This product works, I was able to rescue all my important documents, photo's, songs from my dieing hard drive, using only the software, a crossover cable and my laptop. For once a product that delivers what it promises!

  Cons

  Unless your familiar with the DOS environment, i.e. old enough to remember it, its not the most user friendly interface. However follow the on screen instructions and you'll be fine.

  Summary

  I thought I had lost everything when my hard drive died and my windows cd was corrupted. With Selkie rescue I was kind of dubious about spending a $100 on a package I never heard off, but it really worked. It took a bit of messing around to get it to work but once I got the two pc's talking to each other I was able to rescue all my important files.

  Pros

  I highly recommend this software!! It is very easy to use, and is a great program to rely on in case of a computer crash! It will work even when Windows won't, and is a great value for the cost! In my opinion, this is 'must have' software for every computer user!

  Pros

  I was sold by the demo version itself. As soon as it is installed, it has a utility to create your own Boot CD. The boot disk also contains a user manual that is pretty accurate, and tells you exactly what needs to be done. However, it was not really clear from the manual whether i had to use the basic or the advanced mode (to enable a direct connection between my broken laptop and my desktop PC), but a bit of playing around and i got it right. <p> <p>I went step by step exactly as the manual told me and could soon see all the files that were present on my laptop as a shared network folder in my desktop. <p> <p>The files are shown as read-only so there is no chance of accidently moving or deleting them or whatever. The demo version allows you to copy files only from the root directory. But at this point of time i was sold. I went ahead and bought a licensed copy from TugBoat. <p> <p>I could now copy all my important files to my desktop PC. <p> <p>This one was a life-saver for me. I have a HP pavilion laptop, and as is the trend right now with these guys, it had come neither with a recovery disk nor the OS installation CD (ok...a bit of my fault too that i didn't bother creating the recovery disks). <p> <p>The service from TugBoat is also excellent. Even though i had opted to download the software online, they sent me a couple of complimentary Blank CDs with the selkie logo so that i can burn my licensed version on them. <p> <p>Excellent software, and excellent service.

  Cons

  None in particular. Manual can be improved a bit.
