Rdex is the digital version of the old-fashioned Rolodex, but you can use it to save any type of text information you want, not just contact information. You can quickly and easily create multiple card files that will hold multiple cards in each. If you're looking for an easy way to save addresses, notes, and other text without learning a complicated program, Rdex is a good option.

Installation is quick and painless with Rdex, and the program opens with a ReadMe text file that explains how to use the program. The interface is basic and has only a File menu and a toolbar over a Notepad-style editing window. The options are limited, but this is a bonus since you won't need to spend much time familiarizing yourself with how to navigate and use the program. Nearly everything is self-explanatory, but you will need to be clear on the difference between adding a new card file and adding a new card. The first creates a new database, while the second adds a new card to an existing database. You should name each card file with something distinctive, like addresses or recipes, so you know which one to open.

One of the more user-friendly features is the search functionality, which allows users to find specific entries quickly. You can enter text in the search field, and it will show you the first card in the card file with that text. From there, you can scroll through other cards containing the same text using the Next or Previous options in the Card menu. The ReadMe file also provides a list of keyboard shortcuts for performing all the main functions. Additionally, card files are saved by default to your main Documents folder, though creating a specific folder for your cards can improve organization. After using the Save As option for the first file, subsequent cards are automatically saved to this folder, streamlining the process.

Recent updates to Rdex have added a feature allowing users to export card files in plain text or CSV format. This enables better integration with other software tools and provides an additional layer of data portability. For instance, users can export their contact lists to spreadsheet applications or import recipes into a dedicated app for cooking. Moreover, a minor improvement in the interface now allows users to toggle between light and dark modes, making Rdex more accessible for extended use.

Rdex also supports basic text formatting options, such as changing the font and size or applying bold and italics. However, these features remain limited compared to more comprehensive note-taking apps. Rdex also allows cutting and pasting text directly into a card, saving time over manual entry.

Comparison: Rdex vs. Google Keep

While Rdex offers simplicity and a no-frills design, apps like Google Keep provide a more dynamic approach to organizing and storing information. Google Keep integrates seamlessly with other Google services, such as Google Calendar and Gmail, making it a better choice for users looking for a collaborative and cloud-based solution. Additionally, Google Keep supports multimedia notes, including images, voice recordings, and checklists, which are absent in Rdex.

However, Rdex outperforms Google Keep in offline functionality and minimal resource usage. Unlike Google Keep, which relies heavily on an internet connection for syncing and collaboration, Rdex operates entirely offline, ensuring users maintain control of their data and avoid potential synchronization issues.

Bottom Line

Even if you're too young to remember what an actual Rolodex looks like, you'll still appreciate the benefits of Rdex. There's basically no learning curve with this free program, and you can save nearly any type of text information you like. It is recommended for users who value simplicity and data privacy over modern collaboration tools.

Designed for simplicity, Rdex requires no dialogs, no fancy fonts, no typing into multiple fields, just copy-and-paste or type into a new card and you are done. Versions of Rdex are available for Java and as an app for Android. An encrypted file format is now supported by all versions of Rdex.
