Pros
Allows you to track multiple stocks with varying views. Also tracks currencies, and compares them against whichever currency you specify: US Dollar --> AUS Dollar, etc.
Cons
Stock prices are on a 15 minute delay. Does not handle stock options ... and of late, no longer downloads stock data.
Summary
I have used PowerTicker since it began as MacTicker, and saw it through the purchase by Galleon Software, and a few good updates ... then one day, I started my registered and paid for copy, and none of the stocks updated. I attributed it to the lateness of the hour, and soon forgot about it ... and when I tried it a few days later, well before the markets closed, the same thing happened: All stocks and currencies were blue, and showed "N/A" for the current price and the percentage of change. I searched the web for information on what was going on with the parent company, but found no news. Sent not one, but TWO e-mails to support a couple weeks ago, and have yet to hear back. Long story short, don't buy this one until there's an update, or at the very least, *somebody* from Galleon Software talks to the Mac press to let their customers know what is going on with their software. In the meantime, I am in search of something on the Mac that does the same thing as PowerTicker X did, and having very little luck.

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br /> as someone noted about v.2.5, v.2.8.0 also leaks like a sieve. at launch on my system, PowerTicker uses 10.8 MB of RAM; the longer the app runs - that is, just the ticker running across the top of the screen; i don't use any of the app's other functions - the more RAM it takes up; i think the most i've caught it using is 760 MB. it also seems to be less than fully compatible with Snow Leopard, as quitting PowerTicker - even before it's sucked up over 700 MB of RAM - leaves a motionless apparition of the ticker across my screen. and finally, when the ticker is running - again, no matter how much RAM it's taken up so far - it's slightly jittery. it's a minor thing, but i can't help but think how much more pleasing it would be to look at if it rolled smoothly across the screen. i love PowerTicker's ticker - jitters aside, it's the nicest-looking one i've found. but behind the scenes is a rather flawed mass of code that nobody seems terribly interested in fixing. i wish they did, but the fact that it's leaked memory for at least ten years now - since before WhiteNile owned it - and that it's been updated somewhere around once every three or four years and none of those updates has addressed the app's biggest problems - doesn't give me much reason to hope.

Australian Stock Exchange symbols now working correctly. This version appears to be good and stable. Great software, please keep it coming. As for the errors mentioned below, I can't replicate them. 5 stars from me...

If you use for example AMP.AX with Unknown Exchange and YahooUS, the Last Trade for AMP comes up, but, using AMP with Australian Exchange and YahooAus or YahooInternational for source (overriding defaults), the Last Trade does not appear. I know this info is not usually accurate, at least not here... (2.05pm is a common time on most panels) and its only a small point. Also if you use characters such as COH (Cochlear Ltd) for Stock Symbol and display those rather than the Company Name (i.e. Symbol View), the bottom pixel row of the COH is cut off. See also TLS.AX... the S. I apologise for the trivial errors but this package is worth it. Also is there any way to say option Click on a background panel to bring all Stock windows to the foreground instead of just the on window selected... say for example pushing safari to the back? Great software - at least 5 stars.

This happened just before the release of this version. To get around the problem, change the Exchange to unknown and alter the Stock symbol to for example AMP.AX. Change the source to YahooInternational and now everything works. Not sure if au.yahoo have been stuffing around but nothing from them seems to work at the moment. Apart from that, nice currency layout changes... Its a pity that today all the screens are RED... Five stars...
This and Panther's Expose...Very Nice!

One annoyance, and in my opion weakness, has always been the inablity to resize the various windows. If you had chosen to view the details of multiple stocks and funds the drag and drop layout became very crowded and difficult to navigate. Overlapping and window handling needed a better interface. Though the solution for this is not developer supplied I still want to point out that this app's usefulness has been inproved by one major addition, the new PANTHER.With the addition of Panther and using the Expose F10 cmd I can view all my holdings that I wish to see details of in one window. The combination of both PowerTicker and Expose has made me a happy trader.

Right now iStock is the best os x portfolio management app for this price range. I found a few bugs right off the bat in this one including inability in recognizing a new default data source (pcquote gives me problems that yahoo doesn't), inability to recognize ticker names for funds and stocks, lack of connection between "buy stock" and stock list (I ended up having separate holdings for multiple buys of the same stock, with no way of joining them back together), and no way to specify cash or reinvested dividends... the date handling in the buy stock screen isn't great either, wouldn't even let me type in "99" for the year. I'm giving it five stars for feature depth but three stars overall.
