PowerSaveUPS is Macintosh only scriptable software for controlling UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) systems with USB (such as APC) Two shutdown thresholds are specified - Soft (Graceful) shutdown, and Hard (Ungraceful) shutdown which is instigated as a last resort. At Soft shutdown time, any scripts in the 'PowerSaveUPS Scripts' folder are executed. Typically these would be scripts that save any open documents as a time stamped 'PowerSave BU', followed by a 'graceful' shutdown script.

This nifty tool allows you to set up AppleScripts to fine tune handling of power outage situations, allowing your Mac(s) a way to gracefully close down apps (and save your work) prior to complete loss of power. My setup is configured to send me an email upon loss of power on any of my machines and also when power is restored. Several scripts also kick in at about 45% power to begin closing apps and preparing for shutdown. You will find sample scripts at the developer's web site and they are very easy to tweak for your own use. You don't have to be an AppleScript wizard to do that, either. If you use a UPS with your Mac, and you leave it up while you're away, give PowerSaveUPS try. Developer John Milner is quick to respond to customer support questions, too.

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />I started using this with version 2.001 and am now running 2.010 on two Macs, both Snow Leopard 10.6.2. I bought it when I discovered that it worked with an old Belkin UPS I had, which is unsupported by the manufacturer on Mac OS X. I now have it running with two different APC units, one old, one new, and it works perfectly with both. It uses custom Applescripts to enable you to tailor your shut-downs in the event of power failure but will work perfectly adequately with the basic scripts supplied, with minimal tinkering. I'd never done much Applescripting but found it easy to see what the scripts were doing and amend to suit my needs. The developer is very responsive to questions and suggestions - the e-mail alert feature in the event of power outage came about via correspondence and a suggestion I made for such a feature. Now, if the power fails I get a message on my iPhone to that effect immediately, before the soft shut-down sequence commences, and I get another message when it comes back on (power in my area is prone to disappear for very short periods so this is useful). These alerts are independent of the Soft Shutdown sequence, so if you don't want everything to close when you get a temporary blip in power but need to know when one occurs then it's very useful. All in all an excellent app that offers much greater control than the built-in power settings in Energy Saver UPS preferences.

Everything works as described and its not too hard to develop applescripts if you are reasonably tech savy. If you aren't, the included ones will help out most users. Communicates well with my off-brand UPS, which is great.

A superb solution which I would highly recommend to anyone who requires advanced scripting in conjunction with their UPS. Better yet, the support I received from the developer when I made initial enquiries into the software was incredibly quick, accurate and helpful.

Plus since when do we have to pay for software that's meant to be used with hardware? It's like buying a digital camera, but finding that you have to pay to get the software to transfer the data to your computer (or to upgrade that software). APC equipment is already expensive enough (but reliable), it wouldn't bankrupt them to include the software to make it work and upgrades of said software...

I'm using an APC SmartUPS 1500, Leopard (10.5.4) and a Mac Pro 2.66GHz Intel Core Duo running ProTools 7.4 HD Accel. The included ProTools script works very well, and saves the open session as a 'PowerSave BU' in the event of power failure, then shuts the system down 'gracefully'. I've just downloaded the 1.1 version and like the new features. All in all worth the money for the peace of mind that my work is safe!

At first launch, if it does not detect your UPS, it will force shutdown and any open apps will be force terminated and next run will reflect a crash. You cannot get to its prefs without forcing into the app. The prefs are less than adequate. Usability is terrible. You must know Applescript to do anything worthwhile and yet they still want you to pay for it.
