PopMan is a POP3 and IMAP4 manager. It can be used to list all e-mails received on your incoming mail server, without having to load these mails completely. Unwanted e-mails can be deleted directly from the server. You can use PopMan to check your e-mail accounts in the background. When new e-mails arrive, you will be notified. To show you whether e-mails contain useful information, or whether they are just spam, PopMan provides a preview functionality. You can use this preview pane to read the text-based content of your e-mails - whether they are plain text or HTML.

Few free notifiers work, this one works well!

Pros
Out of many notifiers I've tried, half of which don't even work, this is about the best I've found for my requirements. It displays a white envelope in your tray. When new mail arrives it turns yellow, with a sound of your choice if you want, and you have the option of a sender and header preview. In fact so many things on this app are customisable - run at startup, interval between checking, which number of messages to show (all, unread or new), etcetera. Some options are found by right-clicking the tray icon, others are on the toolbar of the main screen. You can add a number of accounts. Install as portable is optional too. Naturally you need an internet connection, but you don't have to to have your browser open for it to work, also when you boot up it will notify of any new mail that was delivered while your computer was off. Last but not least, it is free.
Cons
It will not open your webmail, although it can open your web client which is handy if you use one. Alternatively you can open PopMan's own screen and see the messages there. But you must delete them from there for the tray icon to turn back from yellow to white. This is easily done: highlight, delete, one at a time, though if moves them to PopMan's trash (you can unselect this)and you've got to delete them from there as well before the icon will reset. This is a little annoyance, for if you only want to deal with messages on your webmail, it means you are doing everything twice over - seeing them and deleting them on PopMan, and then opening them, moving to folders, etc. on your webmail.
Summary
If you use an email client that doesn't notify, you should love PopMan. If like me you just want notifying of new webmail it still works very well, providing you don't mind the additional task of deleting everything from PopMan to reset the tray icon.<br /><br /><span class='notifyMsg'> Updated </span>on Feb 5, 2014<p/>At end of December 2013 PopMan continually failed to connect to the server. This was happening on both of my computers. Whether it was temporary or terminal I do not know, because I uninstalled it and started using Poppy instead.
