PConMe is a virtual machine. A virtual machine is a real computer complete with an operating system and software installs. The CPU, motherboard and on-board cards are, however, simulated, utilising a host's hardware to actually run.This technology is ideal for education because it provides a computing sandbox for very little cost - a space to explore, discover and experiment; with a virtual computer there are no expensive repairs - simply reinstall a new image and go again. Awesome.What is the Operating System?The operating system is Ubuntu 10.10, Maverick Meerkat. There are two versions of the computer you can use. One is a traditional Ubuntu developer environment; there is a menu system, but it is designed to support rapid use of the Terminal. The other environment is based on the familiar desktop platform, as used in Windows. The terminal is still available, but the menus are more user friendly.
