This nutritional database helps users quickly find detailed information on more than 5,000 common foods, although it lacks printing features. Nutrition Access's basic interface lists foods in alphabetical order and displays the selected food's calorie content, total fat, cholesterol, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals. One helpful feature is the ability to change calculations by adjusting portion sizes from the default 100 grams. Users can calculate the percentages of daily values based on weight in grams or switch to measurement by serving size. The search feature quickly locates a specific food from the reference database, or users can type the first few letters to jump to the matching entries. Reference material explaining the FDA-recommended daily values is included. This program lacks the ability to print or export information, but users wanting an easy way to obtain nutritional information will find this freeware application beneficial.

Type in the name of the food and the program displays LOTS of information.
Cons
Limited database - in my opinion. I do more home cooking and it is hard to find just plain food items. There are plenty of brand name items.
Summary
It's free and sometimes you get a hit. Thanks for the free software.

Pros
Easy to use; lots of nutritional info.

Lists a lot of baby foods, which, for most adults, is pointless (i.e., the average adult is not going to select baby foods for a typical meal).
Summary
Simple interface, but results are confusing. For example, I entered the word "banana", and got 40 results, about half of which were baby foods. So, I selected "Bananas, Raw", and got lots of great info . . . except for one detail: I have no idea how "Total weight: 100 grams" relates; is it a small banana, medium, or large? Another example, It couldn't find "turkey sandwich", so I entered "turkey". I got 193 results, some of which were baby foods (there should be a way to opt out of baby foods). Of the remainder, there was a huge number of both commercial and generic items, with too many of the latter listing degrees of cooked types (e.g., skin-on, skin-off; breast, thigh; raw, roasted; etc). Quite frankly, I don't want to spend time (or calories!) searching for something relatively simple! It should have grouped the items, then let the user select sub-groups, similar to going through a Windows folder and series of sub-folders, before getting to the desired file. I'm going to keep this on my desktop, mostly to avoid having to go online to get results, but I wish the results were easier to view/select. P.S. FYI: There needs to be a standard for food servings. This and other online and downloadable programs have a wide range of weights and measures for a given food. For example, in 3 programs that I tried (1 online, 2 downloaded), a raw banana had 63, 92, and 110 calories. Only one (this program) gave a weight measure, which, as I said, above, was incomparable to my desired item (i.e., I'm not going to weigh everything I eat!). All these programs might be correct, if they showed a measurement, standard or otherwise, but, how is the average user supposed to know that? (granted, diet conscious folks will have scales, but, I'm willing to bet that some won't have the "right" unit of measure for the given calorie counting computer program!).<br /><br /><span class='notifyMsg'> Updated </span>on Sep 11, 2010<p/>Two corrections: 1) it turns out that you can adjust the portion size to something other than metric by clicking on "Adjust portion size" on the toolbar, and 2) items with multiple words can be found by separating them with a comma; however, you need to know the "magic" combination word words; e.g., "apricot,dry" won't be found, but "apricots, dried" will; "chocolate chips" (comma separated or not) will give you trail mix! "Chocolate" gives 138 entries, the 42nd of which (one "page" scroll down) lists "candies, sweet chocolate", so you can guesstimate from that.

Its set up for American guidelines and thats it. Could do with a few tweaks, but that would be getting too picky. May be a little confusing to install for someone who is not very computer illeterate
Summary
I like it because it has all the data I am looking for in one place. A few changes I would like to see is a setting to choose what country the user is from (ie Australia), and the addition of choline content. Also an update would be nice :) I do like this program a lot.

It might be a nice database, but I did not like that it also installed Christmas Snow/Fireplace screensavers, and did it in a sneaky way - the install did not start until a minute after the install for the program completed. I tried deleting the programs, but the next time I opened Nutrition Access, they tried to load again. Not good.

Nutrition Access dissplays detailed nutritional information for individual foods. The program includes a database of over 5,000 foods. Up to 29 values will be displayed for each food: ten vitamins, ten minerals, fiber, cholesterol, protein, carbohydrate, three types of fat, total fat, and total calories. The portion size can be adjusted and the nutrient content will be immediately recalculated. Percent Daily Values, as currently displayed on most food labels, can also be calculated and displayed.
