- This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I asked the author why I had to continually update their software and if they could do a software update program for their software to make the lives of their users much easier instead of having to download a new copy almost monthly, unstuff it and replace the old version. It gets even more complex with the Emulator Enhancer add on which also needs regular updates. This is the reply that I recieved when I voiced these concerns: "I see no need for automatic updating, as such a feature provides a whole lot of dead traffic to my web site - which has to be paid for - and is a relatively minor issue as anyone who looks at my web page can quickly see what the latest versions are." -Richard Bannister March 13, 2006 So all we, the users, are to the author is traffic. This concept of visiting a website would be a decent idea in the ideal world but must be a complete headache for the modem users, the people that lack a constant internet connection and the people who actually want to play these emulators. If the author desires so much traffic then maybe he can do so by providing some content on the webpage such as more information/help files/forums on the products he offers instead of forced updates. I want to run an application that works, not a car that needs tuneups, upgrades add ons and trips to get serviced.
Beats the competition!

Just wanted to play

- This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I used to run RockNES on my Beige G3 266Mhz. It was a little slow, but it was tolerable. I went to see if I could find a new version of that program, because I was in the mood for some old NES goodness. To my surprise, RockNES said it was pretty slow on anything under 1GHz, and those with slower machines should try Nestopia. I have a 700MHz G3 iBook, currently. I tried Nestopia. It is chopp and so far has failed to save my games. Additionally, the Game Genie codes I tried to use did nothing. The Keyboard settings were hidden in the Joystick Settings, which popped up a message telling me I had none, so I failed to notice the Keyboard button at the bottom of the window. There were no options for setting the screen size to 2x, 3x, etc. Yet you could set the effects settings as such. If your effects settings didn't match your screen size, it had to work harder to scale it. It would be hard to pull the window to exactly 2x its normal size. I do not understand why emulating the NES has taken on such huge system requirements, when in the past it did not. I am saddened by this.
Sloooooow....
