Do you have to break your rhythm while typing to use your mouse? Are you tired of getting killed in a game every time you reach for your mouse to target some miscreant? Do you have some other perfectly good reason to want to control your cursor with your keyboard instead of a mouse or similar pointing device? Try MouseFighter, a free program that lets you control your cursor and make mouse clicks using your keyboard's direction arrows and keys you can specify.

MouseFighter's small interface includes tabs for setting keys, called "mousekeys," as well as configuring the cursor's speed and motion and making advanced settings such as compensating for ergonomic keyboards. There's also a useful automatic switch option that turns MouseFighter off when you press a key other than a mousekey. The Keys page has the four axial controls and four other buttons: left click, right click, activation key, and show jump targets (we could set the jump size in percentage of screen size via a slider on the Settings tab).

We activated MouseFighter by pressing and holding the Caps Lock. Next we pressed the Up and Left arrows simultaneously, sending the cursor flying diagonally across our desktop. Pressing the Right arrow moved the cursor right, and pressing either Up or Down would send the cursor swooping up or down. It's a bit different from mousing, but we think most users will get the hang of it easily enough. It helps that it's fun to do.

Using the Caps Lock to turn MouseFighter on and off, we developed a feel for using the arrows and keys as mouse controls. We also tried MouseFighter with a keyboard that had a built-in joystick-style pointer. MouseFighter more than held its own against the hardware. Occasionally, we found that forgetting to switch off the program before typing in Word sometimes activated unintentional mouse clicks, but a little practice cured that bad habit. For those who need it, MouseFighter would be a great tool.
