It is 1930 in the sprawling, atmospheric city of New Heaven. You step into the worn-out shoes of Tommy Angelo, a regular cabdriver whose life changes forever after a chance encounter with the mob. This gripping video game, Mafia, masterfully pulls you directly into a dangerous world of organized crime.

Top Recommended Alternative

Reluctantly thrust into the Salieri crime family, Tommy’s initial hesitation quickly fades as the financial rewards become too massive to ignore. What follows in the game Mafia is a truly gripping, cinematic descent into the dark, violent underbelly of 1930s organized crime.

Mafia’s narrative shines brightest as it explores the heavy psychological toll of Tommy’s rapid ascent through the underworld. Spanning over 20 thrilling, action-packed missions, the core gameplay offers excellent variety, from high-stakes bootlegging and intense bank robberies to chaotic, adrenaline-fueled shootouts. Driving through the city feels authentic, featuring over 60 period-accurate vehicles that boast realistic physics and real-time damage modeling.

High price of becoming a Made Man

However, the experience is not without its share of noticeable shortcomings. While the combat is violent and satisfying, utilizing a solid arsenal of over a dozen era-appropriate weapons like the iconic Tommy gun, the overall gunplay can occasionally feel stiff and dated by modern gaming standards. The pacing during certain traversal segments also slows down significantly, forcing you to spend long stretches driving across the map.

Additionally, players should be aware that this specific rerelease comes with a heavily edited soundtrack. Because it completely lacks the original licensed music, some of the authentic 1930s atmosphere is unfortunately lost during your long drives. Despite these flaws, the compelling story of loyalty, greed, and inevitable betrayal manages to keep you thoroughly hooked from the opening cinematic to the final showdown.

Bottom Line

Classic mob story

Mafia delivers an exceptionally honest, gritty look at the American dream gone completely wrong. While the clunky combat controls and the edited, unlicensed soundtrack slightly diminish the overall immersion, the exceptional narrative and historical architecture of New Heaven shine through beautifully. If you love deep, story-driven crime dramas, Tommy’s tragic journey into the Salieri family is absolutely an experience worth taking.
