• No Big Problems.

  Pros

  I was getting annoying pop ups that nothing else could find or wipe out. JRT picked up the two sources and wiped them out. My hat was off. It did what Malwarbytes, ASC, and others could not do.

  Cons

  The newest version is 7.6.4. and it doesn't seem to work well. It sets a restore point but leaves no way to access it. Previously, JRT created a file of deleted programs and left it on the desktop. No more. Nor does it tell you the results of a scan. It simply disappears.

  Summary

  It's not as good as it was in previous versions.

  This download has malware according to Avira. The version on bleepingcomputer (who make their own cleaner which seemed to turn off my Avira?) didn't - but some releases "work" and some don't complete the scan/repair for some reason. Iffy. Adwcleaner seems great though, at the moment.

  Gets rid of tons of junk from Windows, registry and browsers.

  Cons

  Old interface. You must rename jrt_new to jrt before running because it won't update if it's called frt_new.

  Summary

  I have literally used this tool hundreds of times. It has only caused a problem once in Windows 8.1 where it kept failing to create a file ion the appdata/temp folder. Not sure why. It will strip and clean garbage programs from Windows and add-ons from browsers. It doesn't get everything, but is one of the tools run by pros for cleaning computer systems. This, combined with ADWCleaner, Malware Bytes and the AVG Rescue Disk will rid you of 95% of junk files, add-ons, and infections.

  None as far as I can tell.

  Deleted a perfectly fine version of Eusing's Free Registry Cleaner tool which has never been bundled as far as I know. Was unable to recover from a System Restore point. The program does do a registry backup before it does it's dirty work. Why the heck didn't it do a proper System Checkpoint? I ended up having to reinstall the Eusing software. Avoid this half-assed utility and use a proper tool like PC Decrapifier and Malwarebytes Anti-malware to clean your system of junk.

  I ran om my computer with Windows 8.1. It took a long time running (several hours) without stopping. After I stopped it manually, several desktop links for well known and working programs in PRC were removed. The malware I wanted to remove (hao.123) was not removed. I did a system recovery to recover my computer to the previously working state.

  I have found this application very useful in the past for catching things not caught by other programs.

  Cons

  This new version of JRT unintentionally removed the safe version of Orbit Downloader (4.1.1.13)

  Summary

  Unfortunately, JRT provides no means for customizing or excluding actions that that you don't want it to do. You start it - and it does it's thing without user intervention. Unfortunately, it sometimes deletes "safe things". All in all its a very good application, but you may have to reinstall software that it thinks are unwanted.

  The older version no longer works. Prompted me to download the newer version which had 2 or 3 other programs attached that were loaded without giving me any warnings or options to avoid it After that found myself once again having my search engine taken over as well as setting off my malware alarms because now I have the well known trovi malware on my machine.

  Summary

  I came back to cnet hoping to find information about this issue but so far I find I am disappointed.

  JRT does what it can to remove PUP's and so on

  Cons

  JRT worked well in two instances, and worked poorly in two others; it retooled the registry entries for Chrome, and thereby disabled desktop links. Eventual fix was to remove Chrome from P&F in Cpanel and then re-install. I was trying JRT in the WIN8.1 environment and relying upon RunAsAdmin to work

  Summary

  I think there are alternatives that work with higher reliability such as SpyBot Search and Destroy.

• Saved my bacon and it doesn't install junk - see pros

  Pros

  Removed a nasty virus/rat program and fixed most everything I needed fixing in a short amount of time. I am very happy with the results. This product does not install any junkware that I am aware of. No adware, spam, etc. - Download.com/Cnet DOES! Scroll all the way to the top of this page (or hit the "HOME" key on your keyboard) and read where it says "Junkware Removal Tool." Underneath that it should say "Download Now." Right under that it says "INSTALLER ENABLED" with a little "i" in a circle. When you click on this green rectangle link ,it downloads Cnet's/Download.com's very own installer program. It is this installer program that probably adds all the spam, adware, etc. If you don't want all that, look under the green rectangle and you will see "Direct Download Link." Click on this to download your program (as I did) and you shouldn't get any spam, adware, etc.

  Cons

  none that I have seen, but others have found that it did erase things they wanted to keep, but this program does back-up your registry before it does anything. You should back-up your programs, registry, etc. before running a program like this. Don't want to sound superior then you, just trying to suggest a tip.

  Summary

  This program got rid of a nasty little malware/rat program that was causing all sorts of trouble. My antivirus had been switched off and I couldn't switch it back on even though I had re-installed it. None of the other antivirus programs I downloaded would work properly either. I couldn't any sound at all. My games didn't work right or crashed half way through them (but only when I was winning - lol). None of my videos would play properly. As well, my computer was twice as slow as before and I couldn't download any windows updates. I tried all sorts of antivirus programs, but they all crashed or wouldn't start properly. Finally, I ran this one. It took 30 minutes to finish, but it fixed all my problems and the computer is working very well now. Also, this program doesn't appear to download spamware, adware, etc. - read # 3 Pros section above to find out where it does this come from.

  none-does not work in Windows 7

  Summary

  Creates registry restore point, then scans modules. Returned "bad module detected" with option to reboot. On reboot, same result. Didn't fix, identify bad module - just an endless loop. What a waste of time.
