Editors’ Review
Isolator for Mac helps you stay focused on whatever you're doing on your computer by blocking out distractions. It does this by obscuring all but the window you're working in, although you can easily switch to other windows with just a click.
Pros
Straightforward interface: You can access Isolator through its icon on the right-hand side of the top menu bar. Clicking on it brings down a menu with options for turning Isolator on, as well as accessing the Preferences pane, among other things. As soon as you turn the app on, all but the window you're actively working in will fade into the background, obscured by the software, but easily retrievable with just a click.
Customization options: You can set the tint and opacity you want for the background apps, which allows you to see more or less of them while you're working on something else. You can also decide if you want the app to start immediately when the computer comes on, and you can set up a hotkey to turn it on and off as well.
Cons
Mail notifications: We did receive all of our notifications from the Mail app while Isolator was turned on during testing. This seems to defeat the purpose of the app a bit, and we couldn't find a way to disable notifications through the app itself.
Bottom Line
Isolator for Mac is a great way to help keep your focus on your work, no matter what it is you're doing at the moment. It's easy to turn on and off, and even when it's on, you can switch seamlessly between tasks by just selecting a different window. It offers a nice set of options to let you adjust its behavior to suit your work style, and it's completely free, making it worth a try.
