• Brilliant pinyin-to-Hanzi implementation

  Pros

  Type in pinyin, out come Hanzi candidates, including full sentences if queried. About to be free. Installs flawlessly in Mac's keyboard menu access.

  Cons

  Web page for downloads is a bit obscure, but manageable. No Lion version yet, but the Snow Leopard version works fine in Lion.

  Summary

  Actually now at version 1.9.8. Frequently updated. If you know pinyin, taught in Chinese elementary school grades 1 & 2 before kids begin learning Hanzi in 3rd grade, then you can instantly generate Hanzi options. If you don't know Mandarin Chinese, be careful about selecting an option - a particular option for Hanzi could mean something entirely different from what you intend. In that case, I suggest using QIM in conjunction with Google Translation. But more often than not, the first option is the one you want.

  This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />My father, who is a professor of Chinese, has the following to say: I have been using QIM for about a year and find it excellent. The characters are clearly displayed, having frequently used characters movie to the front is very useful, and I have not had any problems with it. On the contrary, the change of the Apple fonts that came with OS10 is a disaster, many common characters are not included, and the range of input methods are strange indeed. Thank goodness for QIM.

It's much better than Apple's default input method - I would strongly disagree with the negative review. The black on white contrast is helpful, too. Apple's choice of fonts and palette size are too small for me.

  This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />QIM is a gem, particularly in conjunction with Dragon Dictionary. It generates an almost complete slate of candidate hànzì from pinyin entry in a word processing document, which can be narrowed by filtering by tone. Generally the most likely hànzì candidates are presented on the first slate, which can be customized. I look up the resulting candidate hanzi in DD to check their meanings. DD also works also in reverse, showing candidate hànzì for a pinyin entry. Both DD and QIM are very short on documentation, but since both work simply and directly (QIM was a mystery until I realized it worked through the language flag menu), documentation is not needed after one gets the hang of it (them).
