  Will install, will detect the device, and show that it was successfully installed. However, when the installer goes into the "configuring" the device, the installer runs for several minutes, then gives an "hpzinstall.exe" fatal error, no matter what.

  Summary

  I'm running Windows XP SP3 on a system with a 2.56GHz P4 CPU, 2GB RAM, and two hard drives totaling 2.5 TB. After following the troubleshooting guide to the letter, the software still will not install. The error seems to be in the Solutions Center software or the scanning procedure; because I ran the diagnostic tests for the printer and scanner provided by HP, and all the tests pass except when the scanning diagnostic is run. All goes well until it gets to the Solution Center test. Reinstalling Solution Center does not help. I can print without problems from any program on my machine, and I can scan using the "Scanners and cameras" option in the Control Panel with excellent results. In other words, the drivers were left installed even when the installer said it was "uninstalling the software." I still cannot use the HP software for the Officejet 4500 G510a All-In-One. In the past 10 years, I have had four HP printers. With each printer, I have had progressively harder times and more time consuming problems installing the software. There was a time with HP printers when the software installed without a hitch, and it truly did get the most out of the printer or scanner it was designed to control. Now the software is way harder to install than it has to be, to the point of being impossible. I have checked my system for errors, ran the Disc Cleanup utility, uninstalled previous printer and scanner drivers, cleaned the registry, ran a virus scan, and closed all programs except the firewall before trying to install the software. There is absolutely nothing wrong with my OS or its configuration. In fact, the computer itself runs smoothly. Still the software fails to configure the device after "successfully" installing, and the Solution Center gives an error message that the device installation is not complete, with no option to complete the installation. The bottom line is that HP's software is badly written, and it only seems to be getting worse as time goes by.<br /><br /><span class='notifyMsg'> Updated </span>on Aug 28, 2011<p/>There was also a patch file available that was supposed to fix the problem I was having with the Solution Center -- CPE_SCAN_DESTINATION_UPDATE_hpcom_001_003.exe -- but installing the patch did absolutely nothing to help. Are there such things as placebo software patches? If there wasn't before, there is now, and HP invented it.
