This primitive, text-based game strikes as a virtual version of the popular Choose-Your-Own-Adventure series of children s books. HLA Adventure is reminiscent of some of the earliest computer games of the 1980s. Your primary goal in this medieval quest is to remove an evil dragon from the kingdom. You play by reading the text scenario and entering commands; there are no graphics or sound effects. Unfortunately, HLA Adventure has minimal hints and tips, so learning what commands the game will accept is largely a trial-and-error process. In one instance, we found ourselves inside of a store with a clerk. However, no matter what we did, we couldn t figure out how to buy anything or even speak to the person behind the counter. The game also comes up short in the features department, as it doesn t offer a single user-customization option that we could find. We can see how this free program could potentially provide a bit of fun to more imaginative folks, but the developer first needs to make it clearer how the game is played.

Solid text adventure
Arnel LegaspiMay 29, 2005
Pros
(Comment written using HLA Adventure v3.) I played the game once, and I was impressed that the author was able to produce a text adventure of this size using assembly language. The game definitely harkens nostalgia of 1980's text adventures, akin to works like Apogee's "Supernova" and IBM's "Zyll". Definitely a good addition to classic adventure games.
Cons
It could use a better help system, possibly a hint system for those less familiar with text adventures. Some modern standards would be well adhered to, such as the use of statuslines at the top, better descriptions of NPCs and other items, and improved spacing between groups of text. Also, an option to turn off color at the start would be great.

Good, solid retro fun

Pros
Fun MUD-like gameplay, good sentence descriptions and interesting use of color. Lots of areas to explore and has several quests.
Cons
Typing 'help' at the game prompt only lists examples of how to use each command. Could be more indepth.
