• Haali Splitter is a good addition along with FFdshow.

  Pros

  Opens .mkv (Matroska) and .mp4 video files. Saves you from finding/buying a video converter and wasting time.

  Cons

  Sometimes, the video and audio aren't in sync. Problem can be solved by simply restarting video, pausing the video, or/and switching back and forth from fullscreen to non-fullscreen mode. SUPER LAME!!

  Summary

  Dealing with .mkv and .mp4 is a real hassle. Haali Media Splitter seems to be the only software that allows you to play .mkv and .mp4 files unfortunatly. Otherwise, you have to convert the file which is annoying too.

  shows matroska movies, sometimes requires real media codec, so use it with real alternative.

  not good with 720p

  I liked it's uninstaller.

  Cons

  I installed this program just to edit a couple .avi files. After installing, those files wouldn't show. The audio was still ok but no video could be seen. Nero reported the files to be "empty", as did other file viewers. I uninstalled Haali and the files displayed properly. So to be fair, the program didn't do any harm other than wasting some of my time. Gratefully, it did come with it's own fairly good uninstaller. It didn't clear itself from the registry but I did. Hopefully, you will have a better result than I did.
