• Useless piece of crap

  Summary

  I tried current GRAMPS on their web site as of 1/10/16, in both Ubuntu and Windows 7. Windows 7 kept getting blocked by my antivirus, both installing and running. I got the Avast error that from its forums means among other things that Avast thinks this program is a piece of junk. When I finally got it able to run, in Windows, program opened, but no intuitive way to make it work. Found tutorial; evidently one is supposed to set up ALL sources AND ALL PLACES before beginning to enter data. ???!!!!!!!!!!!! So I managed to enter a name, which wasn't easy. Got first name, figured after peering for two minutes where to put the last name, had to click in gender to pick F, because typing f in that field doesn't work - and then it didn't take it. Entered date of birth however and it didn't say anything. Couldn't enter a source because you have to select it from a preentered list. ???!!!!!!!!!! And that's as far as I got. Tried to reopen it to add more data and couldn't even figure out how. In UBUNTU, now, when I opened it I immediately had errors. Image functionality and geographical functionality need me to spend two weeks getting the program to work before I even use it... I don't think so! I couldn't find how to enter my first person. I clicked here, clicked there, and the program closed on me for unhandled exception. Complete junk! Anyone who LIKES this program is an alien from another planet.

• Great program

  Pros

  I have some other programs and all of them try or do get money to use them. I have spent a bundle over the years on Family Tree Maker. The Personal Ancestral file that was free from the LDS is now referred to 3 programs that have some free stuff but try to make you upgrade all the time. I downloaded Gramps and it is a great program!

  Cons

  None that I have found.

  Summary

  I am using Windows 7. Download was simple and easy. Exported my existing files in Gedcom to the new Gramps program with no problem. Give it a try and see if you like it.

  Pros

  Does everything I can think of and then some. Keeps track of information you are missing for you. Lots of different ways to view and navigate genealogical information and relationships. Can include media files, like photographs and documents. Online documentation is generally good. It's free and there are zero ads. Installation was simple in Windows 8.

  Cons

  Less intuitive than it should be. Some features are not fully documented. Visual appearance is more functional than attractive.

  Summary

  I'm new to genealogy, but I found this program to be nearly unlimited in what it offered. And it's smart, guiding me through the process of documenting everything carefully, while making it easy to reference the same document multiple times.

  None - since it wouldn't in Windows XP, unable to evaluate Pros.

  Wouldn't work in Windows (XP).

  Summary

  I tried running both the portable version and desktop version. In both cases, a small start-up screen loaded and then vanished. I was disappointed since the features seemed promising. I ended up purchasing RootsMagic but if the bugs in the Windows version of GRAMPS can be worked out, I'd be willing to re-visit the program.

  Pros

  The MOST powerful genealogy program ANYWHERE free OR expensive.It is pretty simple to go to the GRAMPS website and figure it out. It is written in python so it is EXTREMELY fast compared to anything written in Java. I love Java, but it is so D*** slow and uses tons of PC resources.

  Cons

  Not very user friendly, If you don't have the IQ to figure stuff out, don't bother rating the program. AGAIN THE ONLY NEGATIVE ... is it requires at least an AVERAGE IQ. Once you figure it out, it is well worth the effort learning.

  Summary

  I feel that some of the software developers may be threatened by the power of this program and may give it a bad rap. This and Family Tree Legions is the only free-ware I use. FTL is simple to use even for a beginner and I recommend it for less technical family members. There is very little that GRAMPS wont do. FIGURE IT OUT DUMBAS*! Powerful features are available as plug-ins (similar to GIMP and Photo-shop). If you can write your own plug-ins, you can expand well beyond ALL of its current abilities. So the ONLY limitations of GRAMPS is your OWN IQ. ... and NO I do not work for them, program for them, or any way connected to them. Just looking at it from a degreed programmer's view ... I admire genius when I see it.

  Couldn't tell you. Would give it zero stars, if this form allowed it.

  Cons

  Downloaded program. Took a good five minutes for all the files to download but, even so, received a message that it was missing several files and would not run.

  Summary

  With all the good programs on the market, don't waste your time on this garbage.

  Easy to learn and easy to use The best display on the web that i have found and i tried most of the programs that i found on the internet

  No so straight forward when linking new spouses

  I love this program and the info that it displays on the web and the ease that you can navigate from person to person
