Apparently no easy way to set the download directory or to automate downloads.
Summary
If the cons are in fact addressed, they seem to be hidden behind a wall of user-unfriendliness.

I was able to download version 3.5.1 and get it to work once.

I can't figure out how to complete the upgrade to 3.5.2 I can't figure out which podcasts downloaded this week vs last week I can't find the files to move them to my mp3 player (which is where I listen to them)
Summary
I can't figure out this application. The user manual and help are written for programmers who want to modify the source code. I could get my subscriptions urls loaded, and it would download the latest podcasts. So it's fine if you just want to click on the results and play them on your PC. The second time I logged into it I started getting a c:\... runtime error. So I attempted to upgrade to 3.5.2, which I was prompted to do when I dismissed the runtime error and the app started up. I downloaded the .gz file, but there are no instructions about what to do with it, and double-clicking it in Windows 8 just asks me what program I want to open the file with. I have no idea what a .gz file is! Where are the INSTRUCTIONS? I had to hunt around to find the files it downloaded, and then couldn't figure out which were the latest downloads except by right-clicking on each and every file, looking at the properties, and looking for the date created. With 40-50 files, that's way too tedious. I gave up. It's way too complicated and non-intuitive for me. I'm over 50, but I've spent 30 years of my work life in front of computers. It shouldn't be this difficult to use.
It does what I need it to do.

Pros
I got disgusted with the bloat of software like iTunes-- and how many intrusive processes it runs on my CPU. This program does exactly what it claims to do, which is to collect the podcasts you want to download, and it does it FAST. I don't require bling or fancy-anything, so this great little program meets my needs perfectly.
Cons
I did run into one problem, which is the format of one of the podcast feeds was unrecognized, and therefore I could not download the collection from the website. I will investigate further, but it was clear that the website was, indeed, using a different (though not unheard of) format from all the others that I had such success with.
Summary
If you want something clean, easy to use, fast, and efficient, then gPodder is the one. If you need a lot of help installing and fear a slight learning curve, then get a friend to help you out. Like all free stuff or inexpensive stuff, it's not as glamorous as Microsoft or Apple software, but this does the core functions so much better.

It's easy to use, easy to subscribe to new Podcasts. Downloads them surprisingly fast. Transferring any episodes to an output folder is very easy. Fast open.
Cons
Little boring looking. Noopod looks nicer.
Summary
Overall it does what it say's with ease. You can open a gPodder.net account for Podcast's and other features. It is simple in every sense and a great little Podcast program which I recommend.
better hold off upgrade if on 2.x version

Very easy subscribing. works very well and has some nice config options. can reside in system tray. has Windows and Linux versions. has the gpodder.net site where your subscriptions can be stored and downloaded to another gpodder if you move to a different pc.
Cons
this was my favorite podcast client of all time. they did remove the mp3 player sync option for reasons I can't figure out(it worked very well for a Sansa player rockboxed in Linux). As my distribution went to the 3.x version(and I did not realize this reduced functionality when I upgraded the distro) I am out of luck, and rather than spend a load of time copying files back and forth, I have had to use an old Windows version under Wine(2.18 I think) and the sync is back. Ugly, but it works.

Can't find the "remove selected episodes from device" dialog yet, but the rest of it seems to be fine. Just have to do a couple of things like tell it to do the gtk notifications etc. in the config.

This program seems to work well although it is a bit sluggish to boot up. I am running it on a netbook rather than a full laptop, so that might account for that minor slowness. I'm only keeping up with a few podcasts. The program has a nice, clean and simple design. It has a similar format to the Snarfar RSS reader that I'm also testing right now. I found it easy to add and delete feeds in gpodder. It automatically worked with the Windows Media Player on my machine. I believe it selects your default player, so you could probably use it with another media player. What bugged me about this program initially was that when I installed it, it installed itself directly into my "downloads" folder. Most programs automatically select the "program files" folder for installation. Because I didn't realize where it was initially installing, I couldn't find the program after I installed it. It didn't show up in my start up menu, there was no icon installed to the screen, etc. It's not a huge deal. I just cut and pasted the folder into the proper folder and I right clicked to create an icon, but that might throw some people for a loop when they first use the program.
