GNOME is a desktop environment made up of free and open-source software, with an emphasis on creating simple, functional programs. Gnumeric is one such GNOME-based program, a simple spreadsheet application that replicates the basic features of popular commercial programs like Excel.

Gnumeric's interface is definitely no-frills, but it will be easy to figure out for users who've had previous experience with any other spreadsheet software. In fact, transitioning to Gnumeric from another program is easy, given the program's ability to handle file formats associated with Excel, Lotus 1-2-3, Open Office, and others. We opened an Excel file with some fairly complex formatting in Gnumeric and it looked and functioned as it always had in Excel. On the whole we found Gnumeric quite easy to use, with one particularly irritating exception: menus, dialogue boxes, and the Help file always opened underneath the main interface. At first we thought that the program had frozen, but after a bit of minimizing we realized what was going on. We searched in vain for a solution to this problem, hoping that there was an "Always on Top" setting somewhere that we needed to adjust, but we found nothing. This was surprising, given the program's quite detailed and well-written Help file. Overall, we thought that Gnumeric was a very nice alternative to popular spreadsheet applications, but the strange positioning of its windows left us scratching our heads.

Gnumeric is free. It installs politely but leaves a folder behind upon removal. We recommend this program to all users.

I haven't found any cons yet. If I do I'll come back and try to edit this.
Summary
I use excel about once a year (for taxes) and it didn't seem reasonable to pay $69 just for that. So thanks Gnumeric!
Installed on Windows 8 and 8.1 64 bit no problem.

I tried repeatedly to install this, and it said the installation finished but nothing will install to the system. A waste of my time.

Opened Excel .xls files even excel couldn't open Opened Lotus 123 .wk1 .wk4 files Opened Quattro Pro .wb1 .wb3 files The look and feel is the same as Excel XP..which is great...Don't need no steenking ribbon.;-) The .xls files, even a 4mb one popped open just as quick as excel..maybe quicker...when I tried Open Office Calc it was very slow and sluggish...uncomfortably so...not this puppy, it's peppy.

Won't save Lotus 123 or Quattro files in native format...but would convert to .xls...didn't try this, but I'd expect some formatting and formula translation issues When opened Lotus 123 & Quattro files had some formatting and formula translation issues, but they were minor and correctable.

I have Office XP 2004 vintage with most current file conversion upgrades..works fine on nearly all .xls files and others I've tried it on. Yet when I tried to open a couple of .xls files on my Win7 laptop, I got error popups saying I lacked the resources to fully display the files...These were 1mb files. My PC has 8GB memory..3880mb were completely free & available. That got me to download Gnumeric..When I opened the troublesome .xls files with Gnumeric, they popped right open and displayed with no problems.

Summary
Excel can't import large data sets (+65k rows). The only way to get this to work in excel is to cut up your data before importing it, which is extremely laborious, and potentially error-prone. Gnumeric handled this problem immediately. Gnumeric also has some native statistical tools that go way beyond excel's feature set. I'm probably going to stop using excel altogether, which is a big step for me. Dearest Microsoft: Gnumeric + Google Spreadsheets = Game Over!

All the above, easy to use has most features anyone would want. Small footprint and quick start, nice layout and design. Minimal clutter and crap.
Cons
Not all spreadsheets from ms style will automatically format properly, most will.
Summary
get started now, this will also help when you switch out of microslop and into a version of linux.

Pros
I suddenly needed to import my geneology information and didn't feel like popping for Excel. I downloaded this about an hour ago and Voila! I have imported and edited my files without so much as even reading the most excellent help files.
