• Reasonable tool, but could use refinements.

  Pros

  I really like the read-from-clipboard interface. (This was the strength of Speakonia.) It's really handy for proofreading: just select text from anything - a Word doc, Web page, Frame file, anything - and hit Ctrl-C. The tool reads whatever is in the clipboard.

  Cons

  I compare this to Speakonia because that was my first experience with text-to-speech. Speakonia had a Lexicon feature; the ability to change the way a given word was pronounce. (e.g.: you could teach it to read BTW as "by the way".) This was *very* handy for acronyms, jargon, proper names, etc. This tool doesn't seem to have that. Also, Speakonia could use the voices, "Mary, Sam, & Mike". (I liked Mary better than Anna), and you could adjust the pitch and speed independently. It still sounded a bit mechanical, but I could adjust it to suit my taste. And it was more obvious how to start and stop Speakonia, which I also liked better.

  Summary

  Not a bad tool. I find text-to-speech indispensable for proofreading. With a few added refinements, I'd be happy pay for a tool like this.

  Pros

  Excellent application does what it says on the box and is very small, compact and out-of the way..

  Cons

  Requires Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5! not a problem for Vista users but its an additional download for XP, though its a small price to pay for free!

  Summary

  Free + No installation: Have tried a lot of TTS applications over the last few year some Free and others expensive, neither had the functionality or ease of use I wanted and many hadn?t seen updates in years. This one?s bang up-to-date and has a superb queuing function that lets you copy multiple sources e.g. I queue mine up with multiple articles from my different browser tabs every morning and just sit back and listen to the latest news whilst drinking my coffee.
